Spend and relax anywhere in the world. If a fraudulent transaction appears on your statement, it's our job to help set it right.

Our direct relationships with merchants all over the world help us protect your transactions. Our systems screen Cardmember transactions, to look for uncharacteristic transactions or unusually high charges that we suspect may be fraudulent.

In the unfortunate event of a fraudulent transaction on your account, we offer a Fraud Protection Guarantee. It states that if you're a victim of fraud who has taken reasonable care, you won't be held responsible for any fraudulent charges.

  • For your added protection, you should always check your statements thoroughly as soon as you receive them. This is also easy to do with Online Services where you can check your transactions daily.
  • Additionally, you can register for Account Alerts, which provide regular e-mail or text message updates on your account balance.

Fraud Protection Guarantee

Your security is important.

Use the American Express® Card online or off, and you won't be held responsible for any fraudulent charges, as long as you've taken reasonable care to protect your account details and PIN. For more information on the Fraud Protection Guarantee refer to Fraud FAQs.

At American Express, we've taken specific measures to maximize your security and privacy. Our secure encryption technology keeps your information confidential.
If a fraudulent charge appears on your statement, it's our job to help make it right.  You won't be held responsible for any proven fraudulent charges.  So you can relax and spend securely, anywhere in the world.

Quick Resolution

Simply notify us if your Card is lost or stolen, or you suspect it is being used without your permission.
Just call 1-800-869-3016, or outside of Canada (please call collect) 905-474-0870.  Once you mention to our agents that you suspect fraud, we will launch an investigation.

The moment we are alerted to a fraudulent activity, our team will work to resolve any issues as soon as possible.

Fraud Prevention

We’re always on guard.

We're proud of our fraud prevention and detection records. As part of our regular screening of Cardmember transactions, our systems will look for uncharacteristic transactions or unusually high charges that we suspect may be fraudulent. If we identify a suspect transaction, we will try to contact you to verify its origin. It's important to keep Customer Service updated with your contact details so that if there is ever a problem, we can contact you and resolve the issue quickly.
