Musical inspiration in jazzy Chicago

Feeling the groove

I've been a jazz lover since I was introduced to it by my father when I was 9 years old and since then I've travelled the globe visiting jazz bars in some of the world's most creative cities. For me jazz isn't all about the music, it's also about the people you meet; and I've made many friends who share my love for jazz all over the world. Recently, some of them decided to have a reunion at the Chicago Jazz Festival, I was beside myself with excitement – there was no way I would turn down such an opportunity.

Thanks to my American Express Cathay Pacific Credit Card, which gives me access to the Plaza Premium Lounge twice a year, I started my trip with a nice and relaxing drink at the Hong Kong International Airport. I was also able to conveniently jump online and catch a few of my friends over instant messenger to finalise some last minute details.

Chicago is a great city to just chill. While it is a major business centre, it's still got such a musical and artistic flair. And because it was the Chicago Jazz Festival, it seemed as though the entire city was more relaxed than I had ever seen. From Millennium Park and Grant Park – where the main festivities were held – to all kinds of funky underground bars that were hosting special live performances, the jazz never stopped for our group of friends. To get around the city, cabs were my preferred choice of transportation as they have credit card machines on board – perfect for those who rely on their cards as much as I do when travelling. It was an added bonus that the Chicago cabbies seemed to all have an inspirational must-do tip of their own! My to-do list was growing with each cab journey.

And what trip to Chicago would be complete without a stroll down the Golden Mile? A few times during my trip, some of the girls and I decided to treat ourselves to some retail therapy. I was able to enjoy American Express Selects® offers at stores all along the Golden Mile and needless to say, my luggage was a tad overweight on the way home!

Chicago is a city that has it all – the musical underbelly, the shopping and so much more. If I continue to put more spending on my Card, I'll have enough Asia Miles to return there for our next musical reunion.
