Get your Card up and running

First things first

If you haven’t already activated your American Express Card, you can do so quickly and securely online. Register to manage your account with Online Services. It's secure, easy and completely free.

For security reasons, we’ll send your American Express PIN separately from your Card. When you receive it, follow the directions on the back of the letter. If you want to change your PIN to a more memorable number, all you need to do is use any of the 30,000 LINK ATM machines in the UK.

Forgotten your PIN

No problem. Click below to view your PIN online – just answer some security questions and we’ll reveal your PIN. If you’re still having difficulties, call our Customer Service team on the number on the back of your Card or visit our Contact Us page.

Incorrectly entered your PIN?

If you’ve entered your PIN incorrectly too many times, it will become locked and you’ll need to use a UK LINK cash machine to unlock the PIN. At the cash machine select the ‘PIN Services’ option. If you don't know your PIN to unlock it at the cash machine, you can view it easily online.

Card number and security code

Your Card number is embossed across the front of your Card. For your additional security, your Card also has a 4-digit security code printed on the front. It’s above the Card number, towards the right, and printed flat (unlike the Card number). You may be asked for this number during phone and online transactions.

Customer password

When you first interact with American Express on the phone, during Activation, or when registering for Online Services, you will be asked to create a Customer Password. American Express uses the Customer Password to protect the accounts of our Cardmembers. Customer Password is always a 4-digit number, and you should select a Customer Password that will be easy for you to remember. You can choose your Customer Password from one of four types: a memorable date, mother’s birthday, father’s birthday or a numeric passcode. You will be asked for this Customer Password during select transactions when calling American Express or when using your Online Account. As a reminder, your Customer Password is not the password associated with your User ID when you log into your Online Account nor the four digit Card PIN.

More rewarding than cash

You'll pick up your usual rewards every time you use your Card instead of cash for those smaller everyday purchases like sandwiches, coffee or travel. 

Just as secure as your normal transactions

Our contactless technology is just as safe and secure as Chip & PIN. Every transaction is protected by the usual fraud protection guarantee offered by American Express, making it safer than using cash. As an additional security measure we may occasionally ask you to complete a traditional Chip & PIN transaction.

A quick, convenient way to pay

Simply touch your Card against a contactless-enabled Card reader and the reader should confirm with either a light, beep or indicator to show that your Card has been read. You can use your Card at the thousands of shops, restaurants and bars around the UK that accept American Express contactless. 

Getting started

Whenever using your card for the first time, you may need to complete one Chip & PIN transaction to enable your new Card for contactless payments. To find out more, visit

Your monthly American Express statement contains:

  • Your transactions for the month
  • Your monthly Balance Due
  • Your Minimum Payment due
  • Your Payment Due Date
  • Your rewards balance.

Go green, go Paperless

Cut down on post and go Paperless. Not only is it better for the environment, it gives you more control as well. You get instant access to six months’ worth of past statements. You can also request archived statements through your online Account.

Once you sign up for Paperless you will receive an email from American Express Online Services once your Card Account statement is ready to view.

Manage your Account online

Online Services gives you fast and secure access to all your Account information. You can stay in control of your finances by accessing your Online account where you can:

  • securely view your current balance, recent transactions and six months’ worth of statements
  • keep up to date with your Account by signing up for mobile and email Account Alerts
  • save time by paying your bill online
  • watch your rewards add up
  • view and sign up to our latest Cardmember offers
  • you can also opt in to receive marketing communications.

To help make life easier, there's a choice of ways to pay your bill. Take your pick from the options below:

Online It’s fast, secure and easy to pay your bill online using a Debit Card. Just register for Online Services, then log in to your Account to make a payment.

Direct Debit You can set up a Direct Debit to automatically make payments each month so you don't have to think about it. The Direct Debit can be set-up to pay the Minimum Due, your full balance or a set amount. To set up the Direct Debit, please call our Customer Service team on the number on the back of your Card.

Telephone  Call Customer Services on 0800 917 8047. We are open 24/7 and you can pay your bill over the phone using your Debit Card.

Post Send us a cheque payable to American Express Services Europe Ltd. along with the payment slip at the bottom of your statement. Don’t forget to write your Account number on the front of your cheque too.

Bank You can pay your bill in person at the bank either by bank giro, using the payment slip provided on your statement, or by cheque.
