First things first
If you haven’t already activated your American Express Card, you can do so quickly and securely online. Register to manage your account with Online Services. It's secure, easy and completely free.
If you have not selected your own pin, you will receive a separate mailer with an auto-generated pin. For security reasons, we’ll send your American Express PIN separately from your Card. When you receive it, follow the directions on the back of the letter. If you want to change your PIN to a more memorable number, all you need to do is use any of the 30,000 LINK ATM machines in the UK.

Incorrectly entered your PIN?
If you’ve entered your PIN incorrectly too many times, it will become locked and you’ll need to use a UK LINK cash machine to unlock the PIN. At the cash machine select the ‘PIN Services’ option. If you don't know your PIN to unlock it at the cash machine, you can view it easily online.
Unable to use your PIN?
If you have a disability that makes it difficult for you to use or remember a PIN, call Customer Services on 0800 917 8047 or +44 (0) 1273 696 933 to request a Chip and Signature Card.
Worried your PIN is compromised?
If you suspect someone else knows your PIN, or your Card has been lost or stolen, please contact us immediately on 0800 917 8047 or +44 (0) 1273 696 933.
Card number and security code
Your Card number is embossed across the front of your Card. For your additional security, your Card also has a 4-digit security code printed on the front. It’s above the Card number, towards the right, and printed flat (unlike the Card number). You may be asked for this number during phone and online transactions.
When you first interact with American Express on the phone, during Activation, or when registering for Online Services, you will be asked to create a Customer Password. American Express uses the Customer Password to protect the accounts of our Cardmembers. Customer Password is always a 4-digit number, and you should select a Customer Password that will be easy for you to remember. You can choose your Customer Password from one of four types: a memorable date, mother’s birthday, father’s birthday or a numeric passcode. You will be asked for this Customer Password during select transactions when calling American Express or when using your Online Account. As a reminder, your Customer Password is not the password associated with your User ID when you log into your Online Account nor the four digit Card PIN.
Don’t you just love it when you get something extra? In addition to the usual Chip & Pin, your new Card now contains clever contactless technology, making it quick and easy to purchase items under £30.
More rewarding than cash
You'll pick up your usual rewards every time you use your Card instead of cash for those smaller everyday purchases like sandwiches, coffee or travel.
Just as secure as your normal transactions
Our contactless technology is just as safe and secure as Chip & PIN. Every transaction is protected by the usual fraud protection guarantee offered by American Express, making it safer than using cash. As an additional security measure we may occasionally ask you to complete a traditional Chip & PIN transaction.
A quick, convenient way to pay
Simply touch your Card against a contactless-enabled Card reader and the reader should confirm with either a light, beep or indicator to show that your Card has been read. You can use your Card at the thousands of shops, restaurants and bars around the UK that accept American Express contactless.
Whenever using your card for the first time, you may need to complete one Chip & PIN transaction to enable your new Card for contactless payments. To find out more, visit americanexpress.co.uk/contactless.
Your monthly American Express statement contains:
- Your transactions for the month
- Your monthly Balance due
- Your Minimum Payment due
- Your Payment Due Date
- Your cashback balance.
Go green, go Paperless
Cut down on post and go Paperless. Not only is it better for the environment, it gives you more control as well. You get instant access to six months’ worth of past statements. You can also request archived statements through your online Account.
After you sign up for Paperless you will receive an email from American Express Online Services once your Card Account statement is ready to view.

Online Services gives you fast and secure access to all your Account information. You can stay in control of your finances by accessing your Online Account where you can:
- securely view your current balance, recent transactions and six months’ worth of statements
- keep up to date with your Account by signing up for mobile and email Account Alerts

- view and sign up to our latest Cardmember offers
- you can also opt in to receive marketing communications.

Introducing the American Express Pass for Passbook®
Get your Account information on the go. With the American Express Pass for Passbook®, you can get automatic transaction notifications, your account balance and much more.

You can select to pay your balance in full each month, this will be taken on or around 14 days from your statement date. If you select to pay the minimum amount due every month, or a fixed amount or percentage of your choosing above it, this will be taken on or around 18 days from your statement date.

To pay online, login or register for My Account at americanexpress.co.uk/myaccount your debit card payment will usually update on your online account, on our systems and our automated telephone service once it has been submitted successfully.
Take your completed giro slip from your statement and your payment to your bank. Cash payments may take 2-3 business days to appear on your Account.
Please write your Account number on the front of the cheque and make it payable to American Express Services Europe Limited. Please send to: American Express Services Europe Limited, Dept 3, Thynne Street, Bolton BL11 1BD. Allow seven working days for receipt of payment. Please do not send any correspondence with your payments.
The Minimum Payment Due is the highest of the following amounts: (1) £25 (or the total amount owing if less); or (2) any interest, default fees, repayment protection insurance and 1/12th of any annual fees or the full monthly fee (if applicable to the product you hold) plus 2% of the remaining
