Below are our most frequently asked questions about American Express European Breakdown Insurance.



  • What happens if my car breaks down or is stolen before my trip?

    If your car is stolen and not recovered, or breaks down and can't be repaired prior to your trip, there's up to £850 for a replacement hire vehicle to continue your journey.

  • What if I need Roadside Assistance in Europe?

    Roadside Assistance is available. This can include a tow to the nearest suitable repairer and any additional labour if required up to a value of £350.

  • What if my vehicle can't be repaired?

    If your vehicle isn't repaired by the end of your trip, we will cover the cost of repatriation of your party and luggage and the cost of transporting your vehicle home, up to the market value of your vehicle.

  • Is there a large excess if I make a claim?

    There is no excess payable whatsoever on the Emergency Breakdown Recovery policy.

  • Are there any restrictions on the type of vehicle I can cover for Emergency Breakdown Recovery?

    Your vehicle must be 10 years old or less, privately owned (not a taxi, hire car or commercial vehicle) and UK registered.

  • What if I'm taking more than one trip abroad this year?

    You can choose Single Trip Emergency Breakdown cover for up to 93 days or an Annual Multi Trip Emergency Breakdown Recovery policy. Multi Trip cover would include trips of up to 120 days.

  • What about assistance in the UK?

    There are two options for Emergency Breakdown cover. We can cover your vehicle for Continental Europe and the UK, or simply Continental Europe only.

  • How do I get a quote?
