How does American Express Go work?


Create Virtual Cards

Program Administrators create Virtual Cards within the American Express Go portal, including customisable fields such as cost centre and spend limits.


Commence Use

The Virtual Card is automatically pushed to the user’s mobile app, enabling them to make payments online, over the phone or in person using contactless payment technology.


Charge Authorised

American Express authorises the charge and confirms that the payment falls within the approved parameters, then pays the supplier. Transactions appear in the app and portal as they occur.


Report & Reconcile

Spend is captured in the app. Program Administrators can download a statement from the portal and make payments to American Express within their monthly billing cycle.

Case study: providing funds to a remote workforce

The Challenge: As an insurance firm ramped up its remote-work capabilities, it needed to be able to quickly provide funds to its dispersed workforce. The process they had in place, a combination of company-issued Cards and employees using personal Cards and requesting reimbursement, made it difficult to understand where company funds had been used and by whom. The firm wanted to regain control of remote spending, and hoped to speed up reconciliation processes at the same time.


The Solution: The firm introduced American Express Go, allowing Program Administrators (PAs) to set up individual profiles on Virtual Cards that allowed remote employees, contractors and company guests to spend within set parameters. The result? PAs spent less time on reconciliation and reimbursement—and the people doing the spending didn’t have to wait to be reimbursed.
