The Boomerang Dollar

In 2017, the Shop Small report uncovered the Boomerang Dollar effect, revealing that on average, 42 cents of every dollar spent at a small business flows back into the local community.

In 2018, the share of turnover being reinvested locally has increased to 45 cents of every dollar. This is driven by an increase in consumer spending and a higher proportion of spend in small businesses. This adds up to $50 billion that small businesses contribute to their local economy each year.

The money is reinvested as salaries to local residents, payments to local suppliers, charities, schools and sponsorships.
