Here are some of the most common possibilities for why you might recognize everything about a transaction – except the amount. Please look through the scenarios below and, if none apply to your situation, contact us and we'll do our best to help.
 
HOTEL CHARGES
I stayed at a hotel but the amount charged is more than I expected.
 
  • Did you use the mini-bar at any time?
  • Did you have a meal after checking out?
  • Did you use any extra services such as parking, taxi services, leisure facilities or health spas?
  • When you sign a registration card, you may be authorizing the hotel to add additional charges to your Card that may be incurred after the stay
For these instances, you should contact the hotel for a copy of the receipt or invoices.
 
 
OTHER COMMON CHARGES
I have other charges that I do not recognize.
 
  • Did you order an item that would have incurred Shipping and Handling charges?
  • Did you use your American Express Card to pay your bill at a restaurant and leave a tip on your Card?
 
CAR RENTAL CHARGES
I used a car rental company but the amount charged is more than I expected.
 
  • Did you pay for your car rental with a voucher?
  • Did you fill the tank with gas prior to returning the vehicle?
  • Did you have an extra driver, extra insurance or child seats?
  • Is there any way you may have incurred a parking or speeding fine?
  • Did you take any highways that incur toll charges?
  • Payment with vouchers usually covers only the rental of the car – not insurance, gas and other service charges.
  • When you sign the rental agreement, you may be authorizing the car rental company to add additional charges to your Card that may be incurred after the car rental period
  • Parking fines are often incurred without a ticket being issued or placed on the vehicle and car rental companies may add an administration charge to the fine.
If any of these apply, contact the rental company for a copy of the receipt or invoice.
