Know more about Card cancellation
Please note the following important points before you close your Card Account:
- Your Card Account must have no outstanding balance, whether billed or unbilled.
- You must request foreclosure of any active EMI at the time of placing your cancellation request
- If there is a credit balance on your Card, you may either use it before cancellation or request the balance to be transferred at the time of cancellation.
- If you have a Membership Rewards® points balance, please redeem your points before requesting Card cancellation. These points can only be redeemed for a credit to the Card Account(s) after cancellation. Any points not redeemed within 30 days of Card cancellation will be automatically forfeited.
- To raise a cancellation request for a Corporate Card, please reach out to your Program Administrator.
You can place a request to cancel your Card through any of the following options:
Please call the Amex toll-free number (1800-419-2122) or the number at the back of your Card.
If you are calling from a non-registered number, additional verification may be required.
Please call the Amex toll-free number (1800-419-2122) or the number at the back of your Card to reach the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system.
- Upon connecting, use the prompt 'I need help with something else' to place a request for Card cancellation.
- Next, say “Cancel Card" and provide the last five digits of your Card number.
- You will then be prompted to answer a few security questions.
- Once verification is complete, an American Express® representative will assist you with your request.
- Please note that you will be asked to provide a reason for your cancellation and give explicit consent for this request during the recorded call.
- Once you provide your consent, your Card will be cancelled and a confirmation will be sent to you via email or letter within 7 business days.
- Log in to your Account and select the option “Chat with us.”
- Request Card cancellation from the American Express® helpline.
- After successfully answering security questions and providing your confirmation, your Card will be cancelled immediately.
- A confirmation will be sent via email or letter within 7 business days.
- You can place a request to cancel Personal Cards only.
- Complete and submit the online form to request Personal Card cancellation — click here to access it.
- Upon successful submission of your Card closure request, and subject to payment of all dues, you will receive a notification on your registered email address within 7 business days regarding the status of your cancellation.
Please note: Your request will only be processed once your Account has a zero outstanding balance.
Once your Card Account closure is successful:
- Please cut your American Express® Card(s) diagonally and dispose securely.
- When your Primary Card is cancelled, all Add-on and Supplementary Cards linked to it will also be automatically cancelled.
