Some chip Cards are enabled with contactless payment technology. Contactless technology allows you to pay by simply tapping or holding your Card close to a contactless enabled terminal.
To determine if your Card can be used for contactless payments, look for the contactless indicator on the front or back of the Card. If there is not a contactless indicator, it is not a contactless enabled Card. If you would like a contactless Card, you may request one at any time by logging into your account at americanexpress.com, logging into your account on the American Express® app, or by calling the number on the back of your Card.
To pay using your contactless feature, first look for the contactless symbol at participating merchants on a contactless enabled terminal. Then either tap or hold your Card close to the terminal to make easy and quick purchases.
Yes. Your contactless Card uses the same secure encryption technology as your current chip Card and fraud protection will continue to safeguard each purchase.
No. For a payment to occur, you must tap your card or hold it close to the terminal. Simply walking by a terminal will not engage a contactless Card for payment.
Not all merchants accept contactless payments. Look for the contactless indicator on the Point of Sale terminal to determine if the merchant accepts contactless payments. You can also visit the Amex Map and find merchants in your area that accept contactless payments – simply click on a merchant and look for the contactless symbol on the Map.
You can use your contactless Card abroad in most places that you see the contactless acceptance symbol and the American Express logo. The transaction limit for American Express contactless payments vary according to each country’s terminal standard, so your experience may differ by country. If you cannot pay by tapping, then pay by inserting or by swiping your Card.
Yes, your contactless payments are eligible for rewards like your normal purchases.
Contactless Cards are currently available for all Card products. If you have further questions, please call the number on the back of your Card to speak to a Customer Care professional.
