Doug Zell is the CEO and co-founder of Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea. He and his wife, Emily Mange, opened their first store on October 9th, 1995, and since this time Doug has literally held every position in the company: coffee buyer, roaster, barista, delivery driver, bill collector, art director, and everything in between.
Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea began as a storefront Specialty Coffee roaster-retailer, but in the past thirteen years its wholesale roasting business has grown to where the company will service several hundred wholesale customers in almost every state in the U.S. Intelligentsia currently owns and operates two Roasting Works (one in Chicago and one in LA) and four coffeebars (three in Chicago and one in LA).
In addition to the commercial success of its business, Intelligentsia has gained critical acclaim within the coffee industry winning many awards for its coffee and Baristas. Doug is also past Chairman of the World Barista Championship and has served as a past Director on the SCAA Board.
