Online verification can help your business find new customers and stand out from your competitors.

This article contains general information and is not intended to provide information that is specific to American Express, or its products and services. Similar products and services offered by different companies will have different features and you should always read about product details before acquiring any financial product.

Your business’s online presence acts as a storefront, inviting potential customers to discover and connect with you when they're searching for the services or products they need. However, when so many companies are vying for attention, it can be difficult for consumers to figure out which businesses are legitimate.

Verifying your business online on platforms and featuring it in industry-specific directories can help. These verifications can not only enhance your business’s credibility but also position it directly in front of your target audience at the right time. By adding this layer of trust, you can help drive more leads your way while making it easier for customers to choose you over your competitors.

What Is Online Verification and What Platforms Offer It?

Online verification is a process offered by various online platforms and directories to confirm that a business is legitimate. This may involve verifying ownership and providing accurate business information, such as an address, phone number, and website. Once a business is verified, it may receive a badge or marker indicating its verified status. This badge can act as a trust signal to potential customers, demonstrating that the business has been vetted and approved by the platform.

Establishing and maintaining a verified online presence can be foundational to building trust with potential customers.

Several major platforms offer online verification services to help businesses enhance their credibility and visibility:

      Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is a common platform for online verification. By verifying your business with Google, you can manage how your business information appears across Google Search and Maps.

To verify your business on Google, you can add or claim your Business Profile. Once you have your profile, initiate the Google Business verification process.

Depending on your business category and location, you might verify your profile through phone, text, email, video, or mail. Follow the instructions provided by Google for your specific verification method. After submitting your verification request, Google reviews your application, which can take up to five business days. You'll receive a notification once your business is verified.

Once verified, you can manage and update your business information, helping to ensure it is accurate and engaging for potential customers. This can include adding photos, updating hours of operation, and responding to reviews. Keeping your profile current can help maintain your visibility and trustworthiness.

      Facebook and Instagram Verified

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, offers verification for Facebook and Instagram business pages, allowing businesses to display a verification badge on their profiles. Verified accounts receive a blue checkmark badge, indicating that Meta has confirmed the account's authenticity.

To get your business verified on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll start by signing up for Meta Verified. Submit your application, ensuring you meet the eligibility requirements. Have your business contact information ready. You’ll need to provide details such as your business name, address, website, and phone number. After submitting the application, Meta will review your details and notify you of your status within three business days. For more information on features, availability, and pricing, refer to the FAQ section on the Meta website.

      Verify Your Business on Yelp

Yelp allows businesses to claim and verify their listings. Verified Yelp listings can help businesses manage their reviews and interact with customers more effectively.

To verify your business on Yelp, search for your business and claim it or add it if it's not listed. Create an account with your business information and a regularly checked email address. Verify your account by entering the verification code sent via email or phone.

      Bing Places for Business

Similar to Google Business Profile, Bing Places for Business allows you to manage your business listing on Bing Search and Maps.

To verify your business on Bing, claim your listing or add a new one and create your business profile. You’ll then receive a PIN at your business address, phone, or email that you can use to verify your identity.

      Industry-Specific Directories

Some industries have specific directories that offer verification services. The business verification processes for these directories vary but may involve confirming your business details and credentials.

Tips for Maintaining an Up-to-Date and Active Online Presence

Once your business is verified, consider maintaining an active and accurate online presence. Here are some tips:

      1. Regularly update information. Try to make sure your business details, such as address, phone number, and hours of operation, are always current. This can help avoid confusion and may enhance customer trust.

      2. Engage with customers. Try to respond to reviews and comments promptly. Engaging with customers may show that you value their feedback and are committed to providing excellent service.

      3. Post regular updates. Keep your audience informed about new products, services, promotions, and events. Regular updates can help keep your business top of mind and encourage customer interaction.

      4. Monitor analytics. Consider using the analytics tools provided by platforms to track your performance. Understanding how customers find and interact with your business can help you make informed decisions.

      5. Encourage reviews. Positive reviews may help enhance your business’s reputation. Try to encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and make it easy for them to do so by providing links or prompts.

      6. Aim for consistency across platforms. Try to make sure that your business information is consistent across all platforms. Consistency can help in building a strong brand identity and may avoid confusion among customers.

Establishing and maintaining a verified online presence can be foundational to building trust with potential customers. By following these steps, small-business owners can help enhance their visibility, protect their brand, and engage more effectively with their audience. Remember, your online verification efforts can lay the groundwork for a credible and visible online presence that can help drive your business forward.
