Computer security company Symantec recently released its "SMB Information Protection Predictions" for 2013 and small-business owners need to prepare for the latest threats. In what can be called 21st century extortion, cyber criminals are flooding the Internet with a type of malware called "ransomware." Unlucky users that download this type of malware will be locked out of their computers. To regain access to their computer, victims are forced to pay a ransom. Three percent of victims pay the ransom, making this a highly lucrative form of crime. Small-business owners who keep business records, personal financial records, customer files and more on a computer connected to the Internet must be extremely careful and ensure that their computers are protected with current anti-virus software and keep full backups of their data.
