In my quarter-century as a FedEx courier, I have delivered many packages during the holidays-some even on Christmas day! Did you know our busiest single day of the year is usually the second Monday before Christmas? This year, on Monday, December 14th, we expect to handle 13 million packages – almost twice as many as a typical day. In this busy time of year, I know that many people want to ensure that their important packages get to their destinations safely and on time. I would like to share seven ways you can help improve your shipping experience and reduce your costs this holiday season:
Use the right packaging. Recently, an appliance manufacturer shipped some glass shelves wrapped in only brown paper -- without any padding! As you might expect, the recipient received more (and smaller) pieces of glass than he ordered. Don’t let your shipment get delayed or even worse, damaged this holiday season by not using the right packaging, tape or padding. Look for free packaging supplies where you drop off your packages or click here for a list of useful packaging tips. If you want more help, FedEx has a Packaging Services department that will provide free design, testing, and consulting to improve your packaging, prevent damage and reduce costs.
Take off old labels. People often reuse boxes when they ship. That is fine – we encourage recycling at FedEx. Just make sure you remove every old label and cover the old markings. The last thing you want is for someone to read an old label and send your package to the wrong city.
Allow for extra time. Sometimes people in warm spots like California and Florida forget that other parts of the country have inclement weather during the winter. (My parents in Key West, Florida like to remind me of that!) If possible, ship your packages a couple of days early, just to avoid the chance that an ice or snowstorm closes down roads or airports. It does not happen often and our team of meteorologists does a great job of keeping us prepared but if you can avoid even the slight risk, it is a good idea. And of course, for those last minute shoppers, remember the last day to ship to ensure express packages arrive by Christmas is December 23. You can see our holiday schedule here.
Choose the best service for you. Each package and situation requires a different service. Some packages must reach their destination overnight, and some can wait a couple of days. Your company can benefit – and save money – by knowing all the available shipping options and picking the right one to fit your needs. A courier like me or one of our great service reps at 800-GOFedEx can answer your questions or go to fedex.com and make sure you’re making the right decisions for your company.
Ask your courier questions. I love when customers ask me questions about the best ways to ship their packages or save money. People are really appreciative when I tell them they can save by bringing their packages to a nearby FedEx Office, Office Max or FedEx Drop Box on their way home from work or holiday shopping. Did you know that you can save on FedEx shipments if you use your American Express card? Next time you see me or another FedEx courier, ask if you have any questions! We are always happy to assist.
Use online tools. Many of my customers go online to create shipping labels. It is quick, efficient and reduces the chance of mislabeling your packages. At www.fedex.com/us/helpguide
Track packages in real time. As a courier, I rely on my mobile devices a lot and you can do the same. You can access FedEx with your cell phone, PDA, Apple iPhone, or iPod Touch through FedEx Mobile. Even if you have to rush out of the office for some last-minute holiday shopping, you can still track your important packages on your mobile device. We answer 5.5 million questions about tracking packages each day on fedex.com—get peace of mind this season and know where your packages are in real time.
Happy Holidays!
