Frank Abagnale became a household name when Leonardo DiCaprio starred in the movie Catch Me If You Can
based on Abagnale's infamous frauds as a youth. For the past 30 years, he has used his expertise to prevent fraud instead of causing it. Abagnale recently discussed in a webcast how small businesses are being targeted by new types of check fraud. While consumers have largely abandoned checks for electronic payments, most business-to-business payments still take place using paper checks. Fraudsters are now cashing checks twice; first electronically using bank services that allow you to take a picture of a check to cash it and later taking the physical check to a check cashing center and cashing it in again. There are simple steps, Abagnale says, to minimize other types of check fraud such as buying "anti-fraud printers," which can protect printed checks from being forged or scanned.
