To enhance the security of your online shopping experience, ALL Basic and Supplementary American Express Cardmembers will automatically be enrolled in the American Express SafeKey facility.  Every time you purchase online at participating SafeKey merchants, an American Express SafeKey pop up screen will appear and prompt you to key in your One-Time PIN.

  • What is SafeKey?

The American Express SafeKey is a 3-D Secure®1 payer authentication service that adds an extra layer of security when a Cardmember shops online.  SafeKey helps reduce unauthorized online use before it happens by validating the Cardmember’s identity with a One-Time PIN.

To find out if a merchant is participating in SafeKey, the American Express SafeKey logo will appear on their website.

  • Why is One-Time PIN needed?

The One-Time PIN protects you from online fraud as it verifies and confirms that an online purchase is indeed being transacted by you, the American Express Cardmember.

  • How it works

When shopping online at participating SafeKey Merchants:

Step 1:
Enter your BDO American Express Card details at the merchant’s check-out page.
Step 2:
Please wait for the One-Time PIN that will be sent to you through your registered mobile number.
Step 3:
Enter the One-Time PIN when the BDO American Express SafeKey pop-up screen appears.  Once your identity is verified via the One-Time PIN, your checkout will continue.
* Please note that the One-Time PIN is valid only for FIVE (5) minutes. 

1  3-D Secure is an e-commerce fraud prevention protocol that is viewed as standard for globally interoperable payment authentication. American Express has licensed the 3-D Secure protocol and launched a branded solution called American Express SafeKey.

  • Do I have to enroll to get a One-Time PIN?

No, ALL BDO American Express Cardmembers are automatically enrolled.  Please ensure that your mobile number is updated in our records to ensure receipt of your One-Time PIN.

  • If my mobile phone number is not registered or updated, can I still make online purchases?

For online purchases made at merchant websites that do not support the SafeKey authentication facility, a One-Time PIN will not be required.  However, SafeKey merchant websites will require you to key in a One-Time PIN.  Hence, you are encouraged to update your mobile phone number through our 24-Hour American Express Customer Service Hotline:

  • Once I have updated my mobile number, will I be able to make an online purchase automatically?

Updating of your registered mobile phone number for online transactions will take effect within TWENTY-FOUR (24) hours.

  • Will I be charged for the sending of One-Time PIN?

No fee shall be charged for generating One-Time PIN NATIONWIDE, except for overseas Cardmembers who are enrolled to a roaming facility. (SMS roaming charge is subject to your assigned Telco).

  • What if I am overseas?

To receive a One-Time PIN via SMS overseas, your mobile roaming facility should be activated (SMS roaming charge is subject to your assigned Telco).

  • What happens if I key in the wrong One-Time PIN 3 times in a row?

You will not be able to complete your online purchase and will be routed back to the merchant website.  To be able to continue your online shopping, you will be required to call the 24-Hour American Express Customer Service Hotline to reactivate your One-Time PIN.

  • Non-receipt of One-Time PIN

Make sure that your registered mobile number is updated at all times.  Update your mobile number through the 24-Hour American Express Customer Service Hotline:

  • Will my One-Time PIN expire?

Yes, your One-Time PIN will expire within 5 minutes upon receipt.

  • Can I dis-enroll my account in this facility?

All BDO American Express Cards are automatically enrolled in the SafeKey facility.  This aims to protect BDO American Express Cardmembers from being victims of online fraud and help ensure a more secure and pleasant online shopping experience.
