It’s a prepaid Card, which means you load funds onto the Card and can then use the Card to make purchases at millions of locations and to withdraw cash from ATMs*, where American Express Cards are accepted. The Card is not for use in South Africa, the other CMA countries and in countries where South African or United States sanctions apply. And it’s all backed with the world-class service offered from American Express.

*Some ATM operators may charge an additional fee when the Card is used. This fee is determined and charged by the ATM operator and is not retained by us.

  6. What should I do with my Backup Card?

Your Backup Card is provided at the time of purchase to minimise the inconvenience in case your Primary Card is lost or stolen. Be sure to store your Backup Card and its corresponding PIN separately from your Primary Card. The Backup Card is inactive, so you can keep it in its original package until you need to activate it if your Primary Card is lost or stolen.

  7. Do I need to do anything before using my American Express Global TravelCard?

Your Card will be activated at the time of purchase. Before using your Card, sign the back, where indicated. 10. Do my American Express GlobalTravel Card funds have an expiration date?

While there is a “valid thru” date indicated on the front of the Card, the available funds on the American Express GlobalTravel Card do not expire. The “valid thru” date is simply required to ensure that the Card can be used at merchants that request and/or require customers to provide a plastic expiration date during the transaction process. You may not use the Card after the “valid thru” date, but you can request that American Express send you a new Card at no additional cost so you can use your remaining funds.

NOTE: In terms of Exchange Control Regulations, you will be obliged to resell the remaining funds on your Card to an Authorised Seller within 30 (thirty) days of your arrival home from your trip. It is your responsibility to make sure that your Card is used for lawful transactions only and in accordance with Exchange Control Regulations. More information is available from any Authorised Seller.

If your Card is lost, stolen, used improperly, or damaged call Customer Service for assistance. Our Customer Service Centre, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, will assist in activating your Backup Card and blocking usage of the original Card.

You will need to sign the back of your Backup Card immediately, and either memorise the enclosed PIN, or change it to a more memorable PIN. You will not need to re-register your Card online. We will do this for you upon activation.

    Restricted countries (subject to change):

    • Belarus
    • Burma/Myanmar
    • Cote d'lvoire
    • Cuba
    • Democratic Republic of the Congo
    • Iran
    • Iraq
    • Liberia
    • North Korea
    • Sudan
    • Syria
    • Zimbabwe
  7. Can I use my American Express GlobalTravel Card at hotels and car rental companies?

Yes. However, please note that in some industries a merchant may authorise a charge in advance and your available balance will be reduced by the amount of the authorisation. For example, when you hire a car, or check in to a hotel, the merchant will seek a pre-set amount, equivalent to the estimated final bill, to be reserved against your Card. This means that your available balance will be reduced by an amount that may be higher than the final bill, until after the final settlement of your car rental period or hotel stay.

In some circumstances, this may temporarily restrict your ability to make further charges on your Card. In other circumstances, some car rental companies may not accept the Card for charges authorised in advance, although it may be used to settle the final bill.

To avoid these issues, we advise you to consider using a credit or charge card when making car rental reservations or checking into hotels and to use your American Express GlobalTravel Card to settle the final bill.

  8. Can I use my American Express GlobalTravel Card at restaurants and petrol stations?

If you’re buying petrol with your American Express GlobalTravel Card, you want to prepay inside, not at the pump. When you pay at the pump, petrol stations, for security purposes, often temporarily charge more than the cost of your purchase. This temporary charge will be reversed in a few days and credited back to the Card. Prepaying inside will ensure that the petrol station will only charge the exact amount of your purchase, not more, so you have full use of the funds on the Card.

When using your American Express GlobalTravel Card to pay at a restaurant, they may check to make sure you have available funds on the Card, including the tip. If the total amount of the bill plus a 20% tip is more than the amount you have on your Card, your Card may be declined. To avoid this, simply tell the waiter exactly how much you’d like to pay from your Card, and if the total bill is more than that amount, pay the rest however you choose.

  9. How can I reload my American Express GlobalTravel Card?

Reload your Card at a branch of the Authorised Seller where you originally purchased your Card. You will need to have your Card and your identity document and/or your passport with you. When you load or reload funds on to your Card, the Authorised Seller of the Card will convert the local currency into the Card Currency at the relevant exchange rate notified to you prior to the load or reload transaction. For more details in regards to requirements, please check directly with the Authorised Seller where you purchased the Card.

Funds are credited immediately to your Card.

Information regarding all fees and limits is included in the Terms and Conditions. The last day to reload your card is 30 September 2016.

  10. How much can I withdraw from an ATM using my American Express GlobalTravel Card?

The maximum ATM withdrawal allowed within a 24-hour period is specific to the currency of the Card ($1,500 if you have a US Dollar Card; € 1,000 if you have a Euro Card; £1,000 if you have a Pound Sterling Card). For information regarding fees and limits, please refer to the Terms and Conditions.

Please note that the maximum amount that may be withdrawn in one transaction can be dictated by the ATM provider and may vary by country and ATM provider. The balance on your Card will not be presented via an ATM transaction (either on screen or on printed receipt). Register your Card online to ensure you always have easy access to your Card balance.

  11. Do ATM withdrawal fees apply to my American Express GlobalTravel Card?

ATM withdrawal fee amounts are determined by the currency of the Card ($2,00 on the US Dollar Card; € 2,00 on the Euro Card; or £1,50 on the Pound Sterling Card). For information regarding fees and limits, please refer to the Terms and Conditions.

Please note that some ATM networks apply an additional transaction fee — they usually display this at the beginning of the transaction to give you the opportunity to decide whether to proceed, but some networks may not disclose this. Please note that the balance on your Card will not be presented via an ATM transaction (either on screen or on a printed receipt). Register your Card online to ensure you always have easy access to your Card balance.

  12. What if I don’t have enough available funds on my American Express GlobalTravel Card to complete a purchase — how do I combine other forms of payment?

If you wish to use your American Express GlobalTravel Card to purchase an item for more than the available funds, depending on the merchant’s policy, you may be able to use your Card toward a portion of the purchase price, and then use another form of payment to pay the balance. This is called a “split tender” transaction. It is helpful to know the balance of available funds on your American Express GlobalTravel Card when asking the merchant if a “split tender” transaction will be accepted for the purchase you wish to make.

  13. Where will I find a record of my American Express GlobalTravel Card transactions?

You can check your balance and transaction history online or by calling Customer Service at any time.

  14. What can I do if I think there has been an error?

If you believe an error has been made on your American Express GlobalTravel Card account, or our service does not meet your expectations, your feedback is very much appreciated. Please call Customer Service to share any observations or concerns you may have.

  15. What about returns, exchanges, or problems with merchandise purchased?

If you wish to return or exchange any merchandise purchased with the American Express GlobalTravel Card, you will be subject to the merchant's returns/exchange policies. Such funds may not be available for up to seven days.

Purchases made with prepaid cards, such as the American Express GlobalTravel Card, are similar to those made with cash in that you cannot stop payment or lodge a billing dispute. Any problems or disputes you may have regarding a purchase should be addressed directly with the merchant.

  16. Can I use the American Express GlobalTravel Card in Europe where they are moving to CHIP & PIN cards?

Many countries in Europe are moving to CHIP & PIN cards (also known as "smart cards", which are cards that have computer chips implanted in them) and the point of sale environment has been upgraded to include PIN entry pads. There should be no issue with using a magnetic stripe card like the American Express GlobalTravel Card, since all merchants routinely accept cards from global travellers without CHIP & PIN. In the unlikely event that you are asked for a card that has a CHIP & PIN, we advise you to let the merchant know that you don't have a CHIP & PIN card and that they (the merchant) call the American Express authorisation line for support.

  17. Can a friend or family member reload the American Express GlobalTravel Card on my behalf when I am overseas?

At this stage, American Express GlobalTravel Card does not allow a friend or family member or anybody other than the Cardmember to reload onto the Card.

  18. Can I exchange my funds back into local currency after I returned from my trip?

You can request a “cash out” of the available balance on your Card at a branch of the Authorised Seller where you purchased your Card. In order to cash out at an Authorised Seller, you must present your Card and proof of identity. The relevant amount in the Card Currency remaining in your Card account will be converted into Rand based on the foreign exchange rate on the date of the cash out applied by the Authorised Seller where you purchased the Card. The Authorised Seller will return the available balance to you, in Rand, in the form of your original funding source or in the form of other payment methods accepted by the Authorised Seller. Limits may apply to certain funding sources such as cash. For more details contact the Authorised Seller where you purchased the Card.
