By activating your Card, you are simply confirming it has arrived safely with you, and you are ready to start using it.
You can activate your Card online, now. At the same time, you can register for Online Services, which enables you to view all your account details online, easily, securely, and for free, 24 hours a day.
For security reasons, we’ll send your American Express PIN separately from your Card. When you receive it, please follow the directions on the back of the letter. If you wish, you can easily change your PIN to something more memorable, at any of 30,000 UK LINK cash machines.
What if you forget your PIN?
If you have received your PIN, but have subsequently forgotten it, there’s no need to worry. Please click on the button below and, after answering a few security questions, you can view your PIN online. Should you encounter any difficulties, please call Customer Services on the number shown on the back of your Card.
Or enter your PIN incorrectly?
If you forget your PIN in a shop, or at a cash machine, don't try guessing it. After three incorrect entries, your PIN will be 'locked', rendering your card temporarily unusable. Should this happen, you can unlock it at any of 30,000 UK LINK cash machines. Simply go to View PIN Online for a reminder, then visit a UK LINK cash machine, insert your Card, and select 'PIN services'.
Your Card number and security code
Your Card number, often referred to as the 'long' number, is embossed across the front of your Card. Above this number, towards the right, you'll notice a 4-digit code, printed flat (as opposed to embossed). This is your security code, which you may be asked to quote during telephone and online transactions.
When you first contact American Express by phone, either during Activation, or when registering for Online Services, you will be asked to create a Customer Password. American Express uses your Customer Password to protect your account.
Your Customer Password is always a 4-digit number, and you should select one that will be easy for you to remember. You can choose your Customer Password from one of four types: a memorable date, your mother’s birthday, your father’s birthday, or a numeric code.
You will be asked for your Customer Password during selected transactions, either when calling American Express, or making a transaction on americanexpress.com. Please note, your Customer Password is distinct from the password you quote with your User ID, when you log-on to americanexpress.com.
Don’t you just love it when you get something extra? In addition to the usual Chip & Pin, your new Card now contains clever contactless technology1, making it quick and easy to purchase items under £30.2
More rewarding than cash
You'll pick up your usual rewards every time you use your Card instead of cash for those smaller everyday purchases like sandwiches, coffee or travel.
Just as secure as your normal transactions
Our contactless technology is just as safe and secure as Chip & PIN. Every transaction is protected by the usual fraud protection guarantee offered by American Express, making it safer than using cash. As an additional security measure we may occasionally ask you to complete a traditional Chip & PIN transaction.
A quick, convenient way to pay
Simply touch your Card against a contactless-enabled Card reader and the reader should confirm with either a light, beep or indicator to show that your Card has been read.
You can use your Card at the thousands of shops, restaurants and bars around the UK that accept American Express contactless.
You may need to complete one Chip & PIN transaction at first to enable your new Card for contactless payments.
