Here are some simple steps you can take to help keep your Account safe while shopping online:
Make sure websites are genuine
Look for the top three signs a site is secure:
- A padlock symbol in the browser address bar (not on the page itself)nwhen you go to log in or pay.
- A web address beginning with 'https://' (the 's' stands for 'secure').
- In some browsers, the address bar or the company name has a green tint.
Keep your Account details safe
- Choose strong, unique passwords - a different one for each site.
- Log out of sites where you've registered your details fully - just closing the browser isn't enough.
- Make sure your antivirus/antispyware software and firewall are up-to-date and running.
Avoid online scams
- Look out for phishing emails and phone calls. Find out what to look for.
- Don't reply to unsolicited emails from companies you don't know.
- Don't enter any personal or financial information into pop-up windows.
