Do I need an American Express® Card to sign up for the FX International Payments service?

No, the American Express Card is not needed to open an FX International Payments account, nor is it required to make a transaction.

How do I open an FX International Payments account with American Express?

Complete the application form to enroll your business in American Express FX International Payments and we’ll contact you to open your account. You can find our contact details here should you need some assistance.

Online Services

I have submitted a transaction online via FX International Payments. How do I know you have received my payment?

FX International Payments from American Express is a real time payment processing system that captures all of your transactions as they occur. You will see the confirmation page immediately following a submission. You can check the status of your transactions online anytime using the View Transaction History feature or you can choose to receive an email at the time of the transactions during set up.

How can my beneficiary and I receive confirmation of a payment transaction?

For wire and draft payments, FX International Payments can automatically send confirmation emails to the initiator of the payment and the beneficiary to confirm that the payment has been initiated. You simply request this feature and provide a beneficiary email address for each of your online payees.

Will I be able to see my phone and fax wire transfer request on my FX International Payments online account?

Yes, all transactions will appear in the View Transaction History feature in your FX International Payments online account.

I have lost my password. What do I do?

Call our Customer Service team at 0800 085 3456 for assistance with your password reset. Or you reset your password by using “Forgot your login details” link on the main log in screen.

Which web browsers does FX International Payments support?

The American Express FX International Payments site works with most internet browsers.

What are your foreign exchange rates?

Exchange rates are subject to global market forces and change constantly. We offer over 100+ foreign currencies. You can review the rates we offer by logging into your FX International Payments account.

How much does it cost to open an FX International Payments account?

Enrollment is free. There are no costs associated to opening your account.

Are there any monthly service fees?

No, there are no monthly service fees.

What are the transaction fees?
  • No fee for Incoming Foreign Currency Payments
  • Standard £10 fee per Outgoing Foreign Currency Payment
  • Standard £20 fee per same currency payment I.e. GBP/GBP, EUR/EUR

How can I get notified of favorable exchange rates?

With FX International Payments from American Express, you can request to receive automated updates on currency fluctuations during a period of time. With Rate Alert, FX International Payments will send you information by text or email.

What foreign exchange products do you offer?

What information do I need to send money overseas?

All payments need:

  • Beneficiary name
  • Beneficiary address
  • Beneficiary country
  • Beneficiary bank name and country
  • Beneficiary account number/BAN
  • SWIFT/ Bank Identifications Code (BIC)

Some minor currencies have special processing needs, so call the Customer Service centre on 0800 085 3456 to confirm.

What if I can't find the SWIFT/Bank Identification Code (BIC)?

Not all banks are SWIFT connected. In these cases, payments can be affected using a local routing code, which will be provided to you by your beneficiary.

What's an IBAN number?

Every bank account in the EU and EEA has a unique account number that identifies the bank, branch and account number a payment needs to be credited called an IBAN number.

There are also some non-EU countries that will require IBAN's and prior to making a payment you should check with your beneficiary if an IBAN is required. Here’s an example of an IBAN for the UK:


Where B = bank code, S = sort code, C = account number.

Where do I find the IBAN?

Your beneficiary can provide you with their IBAN. All EU and EEA account holders have been provided with an IBAN.

How can I keep my personal information secure?

1) Do not keep your passwords or login details written down or saved on your computer.

2) Destroy, preferably shred, any documents or receipts that contain personal financial information when you dispose of them.

3) Do not disclose login details or passwords in response to unsolicited emails claiming to be from your bank, credit union credit card company, or social networking site.

4) Only divulge your details in a telephone conversation when you have instigated the call and are familiar with the company.

What do I do if I suspect a Phishing e-mail?

If you suspect a phishing email, do not reply to the email and never follow any links. If you receive an email relating to American Express that you believe could be fraudulent, forward the email to us at Please do not include your account number in the email. If you feel your American Express account information has been compromised, please contact us immediately at 0800 085 3456

How can I ensure that messages from FX International Payments are genuine?

FX International Payments will never ask for your log in information or password in an email or text message. We would never send you an email or text message asking you to enter your Internet Banking details either through an email, text message or website.

Transactions & Customer Service

What are your hours of operations?

You may initiate a transaction via FX International Payments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, you cannot lock in rates between Friday 4:45 PM to Monday 8:45 AM GMT. You also cannot book forward contracts after 4:45 PM GMT. Our Customer Service line is available to assist you at 0800 085 3456, Monday through Friday, 24 hours a day

Do I need to set up a separate bank account just to be used for FX International Payments services?

No, there is no need to set up a separate bank account. We will debit your business bank account based on the amount you requested. You may also set-up multiple business bank accounts from which we can electronically debit your various wire transfers customized to meet your business needs.

Is there a minimum/maximum limit per transaction?
No, however we adhere to the UK government regulations and local regulations in foreign markets. If a transaction raises minimum/maximum issues, we will contact the account owner immediately to help in resolving it.
What if I submit a Transaction Request and I want to cancel it?

If we have not already completed your transaction, we will make every effort to accommodate your cancellation request. You can also contact our dedicated Customer Service team at hours a day, 7 days a week. Our Customer Service line is available to assist you at 0800 085 3456 Monday through Friday, 24 hours a day (GMT). We will do our best to assist you with your cancellation request Please refer to the FXIP terms and conditions for details of cancellations and amendments of FXIP orders.

How long will it take for my international money transfer to be completed?

This will depend on the currency sent and the country you are sending the payment to Sterling and Euro payments within the EEA – typically 2 business days or less and other currencies – typically 2-4 business days.1

How does American Express settle to make an international payment?

We will set up an agreement with your bank which allows us to electronically withdraw funds from your bank account by direct debit.

When your company requests a telegraphic transfer, we'll contact your bank on your behalf to withdraw funds to complete the transaction. Alternatively, you can deposit the funds directly into our account.
