How do I create a User ID and Password for americanexpress.com?

If you do not already have an online account with American Express, you will need to create a User ID and Password by visiting americanexpress.com and clicking “Create New Online Account.” Please keep in mind that if you change your User ID or Password on either americanexpress.com or while using Sign Up with Amex, Verify with Amex or Amex Express Checkout, those changes will be reflected across all American Express User ID and Password entry fields.

What if I forgot my americanexpress.com User ID or Password?

Click the “Forgot your Password” link on either americanexpress.com or on the Sign Up with Amex, Verify with Amex or Amex Express Checkout login pages to retrieve your User ID and reset your Password.

Are there any fees when I use Sign Up with Amex, Verify with Amex or Amex Express Checkout?

There are no fees associated with using Sign Up with Amex, Verify with Amex or Amex Express Checkout. However, if you choose to receive a one-time access code via SMS, you may incur standard messaging fees from your mobile phone carrier.

What is a one-time access code? Why is it required?

For security purposes, American Express may require either a one-time access code or a Card ID (CID) to authenticate a Card Member.

  • A one-time access code is a unique series of numbers that can be received via email or SMS. If prompted, please select how you wish to receive the one-time access code, and then enter the code into the appropriate field to continue using Amex Express Checkout, Sign Up with Amex or Verify with Amex. Please note: A working internet and/or data connection is required to receive a one-time access code, and standard messaging rates from your mobile phone carrier apply.
  • A CID is the four-digit, non-embossed number that is printed above your Card number on the front of your Card.

My americanexpress.com account is locked. How can I unlock it?

To prevent unauthorized access to your account, we will lock your online account if you enter an incorrect User ID, Password, CID, or one-time access code too many times. You can unlock your account by calling the number on the back of your Card for assistance.

Will Airbnb see my American Express User ID or Password?

No. We will never share your americanexpress.com User ID or Password with Airbnb.

What personal information will be shared with Airbnb?

When you use Sign Up with Amex or Verify with Amex on Airbnb, you will be able to send your Card and billing information to Airbnb. Within the Sign Up with Amex and Verify with Amex experiences, after you provide the last five digits of your Card to Airbnb, Amex will send your full account number to Airbnb. Airbnb will save this information to your Airbnb account.  When you use Amex Express Checkout on Airbnb, you will be able to send your Card and billing information to Airbnb to enable Airbnb to process your reservation. Airbnb will ask permission to save your Card and billing information to your Airbnb profile before you use Amex Express Checkout, and will save your Card and billing information once you make a reservation using Amex Express Checkout. American Express will obtain your permission before sharing any personal information with Airbnb.   You can edit and/or delete all of the Card account and personal information sent to Airbnb by visiting your Airbnb account profile. For additional information regarding how American Express protects your privacy, please visit americanexpress.com/privacy.

Are Sign Up with Amex, Verify with Amex and Amex Express Checkout secure?

Yes. Security and service are priorities for American Express. Sign Up with Amex, Verify with Amex and Amex Express Checkout utilize security measures to keep your Card number and personal information secure during each process. For example, Sign Up with Amex, Verify with Amex and Amex Express Checkout use multi-factor authentication to reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions. Card Members who use Sign Up with Amex, Verify with Amex and Amex Express Checkout get all the same Card Member benefits, offers and service that come with their Card Membership.

Sign Up with Amex

What is Sign Up with Amex?

Sign Up with Amex is the fast and secure way for an eligible American Express Card Member who has an americanexpress.com account to create an Airbnb account by using  his or her americanexpress.com User ID and Password to add an American Express Card and billing information, as well as date of birth, to his or her Airbnb account. You can manually change or input your date of birth on Airbnb before you finish setting up your account.

How do I use Sign Up with Amex to create an Airbnb account?

To create an Airbnb account using Sign Up with Amex, at the Airbnb home page, click “Sign Up” and then select Sign Up with Amex. Enter your americanexpress.com User ID and Password, choose the American Express Card you want to use and then enter your one-time access code (see one-time access code question). You will also be asked to send the last five digits of your selected American Express Card to Airbnb, which you can do within the Sign Up with Amex experience. After you provide the last five digits of your Card to Airbnb, American Express will send your full account number to Airbnb. Your American Express Card account and billing information will be auto-filled into your Airbnb account and you will be prompted to create your Airbnb account password.

Verify with Amex

What is Verify with Amex?

Verify with Amex allows you to use your americanexpress.com User ID and Password to identify yourself as an American Express Card Member in the “Verification ID” section of your “Profile” on Airbnb and to add your American Express Card and billing information to your Airbnb account. You will also be asked to send the last five digits of your selected American Express Card to Airbnb, which you can do within the Verify with Amex experience. After you provide the last five digits of your Card, Airbnb can obtain your full account number from American Express. To use Verify with Amex, go to the “Trust and Verification” section in your “Profile.”  Click “Verify Me” and go to “Add More Verifications,” and then click on “Connect” next to American Express. Fellow Airbnb members will now be able to see a badge on your Airbnb profile that identifies you as an “American Express Card Member.” You can remove this badge, as well as your Card and billing information, by visiting your Airbnb profile.

I used Verify with Amex to identify myself as an American Express Card Member but no longer want to display it on my Airbnb profile. What should I do?

To remove the identification of you as an “American Express Card Member” from your Verifications, go to the “Trust and Verification” section in your “Profile.” In the “Your Current Verifications” section, click on “Disconnect” next to American Express and “American Express Card Member” will no longer display in your profile.  You can identify yourself as an American Express Card Member by using Verify with Amex again at any time.

Amex Express Checkout

What is Amex Express Checkout?

Amex Express Checkout is the fast, secure way for eligible American Express Card Members who have an americanexpress.com account to complete bookings on Airbnb. With Amex Express Checkout, Card Members can enter their americanexpress.com User ID and Password and American Express will share their Card and billing information with Airbnb in order to process the transaction -- all in just a few clicks. In order to use Amex Express Checkout on Airbnb, Airbnb asks to save your Card and billing information in your Airbnb profile. If you do not want Airbnb to save your Card and billing information to your Airbnb profile, you should not use Amex Express Checkout.

How do I use Amex Express Checkout to pay for my booking?

When you are on the Airbnb “Payment” page, select Amex Express Checkout as your “Payment type.” At the Amex Express Checkout screen, enter your americanexpress.com User ID and Password. Then, select your eligible American Express Card and if prompted, enter your one-time access code and agree to allow American Express to share your Card and billing information with Airbnb. American Express will then auto-fill your Card and billing information to enable Airbnb to complete your reservation. You'll be able to review your request before it’s final.

Before you use Amex Express Checkout on Airbnb, Airbnb will ask to save your Card and billing information to your Airbnb profile. If you do not want Airbnb to save your American Express Card and billing information to your Airbnb profile, you should not use Amex Express Checkout.

How will an Amex Express Checkout transaction appear on my American Express statement?

All transactions completed with Amex Express Checkout will begin with “CHKOUT” on your American Express billing statement.

Who should I contact if I have a question about a booking made with Amex Express Checkout?

Please contact Airbnb directly with questions regarding your booking.

Using Membership Rewards Points

Am I eligible to use Membership Rewards points for my booking?

To use points for all or a portion of your booking, you must have a valid American Express Consumer Card, Business Card from American Express OPEN, or Corporate Card enrolled in the Membership Rewards program and be eligible to use points. Click here to view eligible Cards.

How do I know if I’m authorized to use points? If I’m not authorized, how do I become authorized?

All eligible Basic Card Members (the primary account holders) enrolled in the Membership Rewards program are authorized to receive and use Membership Rewards points for purchases. Additional Card Members can receive Membership Rewards points for purchases but will not be able to use them for purchases unless the Basic Card Member enables them to do so. If you are an Additional Card Member and the Basic Card Member enables you to redeem points, you are considered authorized to use points. To find out if you are authorized to redeem points, please check with your Basic Card Member.

If you recently became an authorized Additional Card Member, or just enabled the Membership Rewards program on your Card, it may take a few days to become active and have the option to use points on Airbnb.com.

I am the Basic Card Member (primary Card holder) and would like to change the authorization status of my Additional Card Member(s) to redeem Membership Rewards points. How do I do that?

Please visit the “Card Authorization” section on membershiprewards.com to edit your settings or please contact Membership Rewards program Customer Care at 1-800-297-3276.

I have an Eligible Card, but was not given the option to use points on Airbnb.com.

You will only be given the option to use Membership Rewards points if:

  • You are using an eligible American Express Card with an account in good standing
  • Your account is not in default when you make your purchase
  • You are the Basic Card Member or have been authorized by the Basic Card Member to redeem points
  • You have at least 143 points ($1) in your Membership Rewards program account

How do I use points for my booking on Airbnb.com?

When you are on the Airbnb “Payment” page and select to pay with an eligible American Express Card, the available points balance of the Membership Rewards program account and the associated dollar value available to use towards your booking will display on screen. The maximum dollar value in points available that can be applied toward the total cost of the booking will populate in the dollar field of the Membership Rewards box. To confirm your use of points, click “Apply to Booking.”  If you do not want to use the entire dollar value of points available, enter the amount you would prefer to use and click “Apply to Booking”— noting that it must be an amount less than the total dollar value available.

If I use Amex Express Checkout for my booking, will I still have the option to use points for my booking?

Yes, if you have an Eligible Card and get the message “You can use Membership Rewards points here,” select that Card during the Amex Express Checkout process. Once you have completed Amex Express Checkout, you will see the option to use points for your booking.

Can I choose to use points for either all or part of my booking?

Yes. During the booking process, you will see the available points balance and its associated dollar value to use for your booking. You can choose to use points for your entire booking, if available, or you can choose to use points for only part of your booking – it’s up to you.

What if I am issued a refund for my reservation and used points for that booking?

If you used points towards all or a portion of your booking and are issued a refund, you will receive a statement credit in dollars for the entire amount of the refund on the American Express Card account you used for the booking. Please allow 2 to 4 days for the refund to post to your billing statement. If you wish to have the points you used toward your booking reinstated to your Membership Rewards program account in points, instead of receiving a statement credit in dollars for those points, please contact Membership Rewards program Customer Care at 1-800-297-3276.

The points balance displayed during the booking process is not correct.

The Membership Rewards point balance shown on Airbnb (when you select the option to use points for all or part of your booking) reflects the most up-to-date points balance information that American Express has on record at that time. However, if you have made recent purchases using points, please allow 2 to 4 days for changes to be reflected in the points balance.

You can review points activity by logging into your online Membership Rewards points summary page at membershiprewards.com and viewing the “Activity Detail” tab.

I used points for my booking, but it’s not appearing on my Membership Rewards program statement.

Your transaction should appear on the Points Summary page of your Membership Rewards program statement shortly after your transaction. Please allow 2 to 4 days from the date of the transaction. If it has been more than 4 days since your transaction has occurred, please contact Membership Rewards program Customer Care at 1-800-297-3276.

If there is a processing error with your choice to use points, your eligible Card will be charged for the booking amount and points will not be used towards your purchase. As a result, neither the deduction from your Membership Rewards program account nor the corresponding statement credit to your Card account (in dollars) will occur and they will not be reflected on the account statements. In this event, if you would like to use points instead of being charged in full for your transaction, please contact Membership Rewards program Customer Care at 1-800-297-3276 for assistance.

A charge for the full dollar amount is showing on my online Card billing statement, but I used points for my booking.

If you used points for all or part of your booking, your billing statement will reflect two activities:  a charge for the total amount of your booking and an offsetting statement credit for the dollar amount used in points. The points redemption will be reflected as a deduction from the total points deducted on your Membership Rewards program statement.

Please allow up to 2 to 4 days for changes regarding credits to be reflected on your Card account and deductions from your Membership Rewards program account. If a credit is processed after your Card billing statement’s closing date, it will appear in your next statement.

I didn’t want to use points for my booking, but I’ve been charged for them. What should I do?

In the unlikely event this occurs, please contact Membership Rewards program Customer Care at 1-800-297-3276 for assistance.

Where can I find a list of all of my points redemptions connected to my Membership Rewards account?

You can view your Membership Rewards points redemption information by logging in to your online rewards summary page at membershiprewards.com and clicking on the “Activity Detail” tab.

I don’t want to see the option to use points on Airbnb. How can I hide it? If I change my mind and want to use points in the future, can I do it?

If you decide that you no longer want to be presented with the option to use points for your booking, simply click the “X” in the top right-hand corner of the Membership Rewards points display during checkout on Airbnb. This will stop American Express from sharing the Membership Rewards points balance with Airbnb and will prevent you from viewing the option in the future – you will only see a collapsed version of the points module on Airbnb that will not include the points balance. To reactivate this feature in the future, simply select the collapsed module and the points balance will be shown.

Please note: Points will only be used toward your booking if you select “Apply to Booking”—they will not automatically be used without your permission.
