Is my Card account number or other information being shared with Apple?

To deliver the best Apple Pay experience, we will display certain account information on your device, such as data for your recent purchases, for each Card you selected to use with Apple Pay, but not your full account information. At any time, you can turn off the display of transaction data manually within Apple Pay by adjusting the “Card Notifications” for each Card. We will never share your plastic Card number with Apple. If you have any additional questions about your device’s security features, please contact Apple directly.

How secure is an Apple Pay transaction?

Your Card in Apple Pay is protected by “Touch ID,” “Face ID,” and/or your device “Passcode.” For your security, when you make a purchase using Apple Pay, you must either use “Touch ID,” “Face ID,” or the “Passcode” for your device. All of your payment information will be encrypted in the Secure Element, a dedicated chip in your device.

Is the American Express Card in Apple Pay different than the American Express Pass?

Yes. The American Express Card in Apple Pay enables you to make purchases with your device. The American Express Pass allows Card Members to receive automatic purchase notifications, account balance and customer service information. It is not a virtual Card and you cannot make purchases with it.

If you have both an active American Express Pass and your American Express Card in Apple Pay, you may receive duplicate push notifications for purchases you make. You can turn off your Pass notifications by adjusting your “Automatic Updates” settings on the back of your American Express Pass at any time.

2. Getting Started

How can I add my Card to Apple Pay?

To add your Card to Apple Pay on your eligible Apple device, please visit this Apple Support page for instructions.

Please note that you must accept the American Express Terms of Use for Apple Pay for each time you add a Card to Apple Pay and that you are also subject to Apple's own terms and conditions.

What is a Security Code? Why is it required?

For security reasons, you will be required to enter your Security Code when adding your Card to Apple Pay. The Security Code for your American Express Card (Card ID or CID) is the 4 digit, non-embossed number printed above your Card account number on the front of your physical Card.

I was prompted to receive a one-time Verification Code. What is this and why is it required?

For security purposes, we may ask you to enter a one-time Verification Code to confirm your identity. This code is a unique series of numbers and/or letters that you can choose to receive via email or text. If prompted, please select how you wish to receive the one-time Verification Code and then enter that code into the appropriate field. For Apple Watch, you will need to enter the Verification Code for the Card you are adding by going to "Wallet & Apple Pay" in the Apple Watch app on your supported device. Please note that you will need a working Internet or data connection to receive a one-time Verification Code.

Your one-time Verification Code may expire if you aren’t able to enter it within 10 minutes. You can request another code by selecting your preferred verification option again. If you are unable to get a one-time Verification Code, please contact American Express Customer Care by calling the number on the back of your Card.

Can I add multiple Cards to my device?

Yes. At this time, Apple allows up to 8 Cards on a device.

Can I add my Card to multiple devices?

Yes, you can add your Card on up to 10 devices. Please note that your Card must be added to each device separately.

Can I have more than one Apple Watch?

Yes, with the latest watchOS, your iPhone can be paired with up to 5 Apple Watches, but each Watch can only be paired with one iPhone.

3. Using Apple Pay

What is a Device Account Number and how is it different from my Card account number?

For your security, when you add your American Express Card to Apple Pay, a Device Account Number is created for that Card on that device. It is separate and unique to your device and different from your plastic Card number. Your Device Account Number is used to make purchases with your Card using Apple Pay.

How will an Apple Pay transaction appear on my American Express statement?

All transactions completed with Apple Pay will appear with “AplPay” on your American Express billing statement.

How do I get a refund for something I purchased with Apple Pay?

If you need to make a return for a purchase made with Apple Pay you can receive refunds to your account. The key difference is that you may be asked to provide to the cashier the last four digits of your Device Account Number instead of the last few digits of your Card number. To find the last four digits of your Device Account Number for your Card, visit the “Wallet & Apple Pay” section of your device “Settings” or on the back of your Card in the Wallet app.

Do I still get rewards (for example, Membership Rewards points) when I use Apple Pay?

Yes, you receive all of the same rewards, security and benefits of your American Express Card when you use it with Apple Pay. Please visit your Card account on americanexpress.com or in the Amex Mobile app to see your individual Card benefits.

Can I take advantage of Amex Offers using Apple Pay?

Yes. If you enroll your American Express U.S. Consumer or Small Business Credit or Charge Card in Amex Offers at merchants that accept American Express contactless payments, you can make qualifying purchases using Apple Pay that will be eligible for the offers. Amex Offers is not available for American Express Corporate Cards. To learn more about enrolling in eligible offers, please visit AmexOffers.com.

I’m having a problem with my device’s software or hardware. What should I do?

If you are having difficulty with your software or hardware, please contact Apple (apple.com/apple-pay).

What is Apple Pay Cash and can I participate as an American Express Card Member?

Apple Pay Cash is a separate offering from Apple and Green Dot Bank, which enables you to send and receive person-to-person payments through Apple Pay. To learn more, visit support.apple.com/explore/apple-pay-cash and applepaycash.greendot.com/termsconditions/.

4. Managing Your Card(s) in Apple Pay

Where can I view and manage my Card(s) in Apple Pay?

For iPhone SE, iPhone 6 or later, or iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, iPad Pro or later, you can view and manage your Card(s) added to Apple Pay by going to “Settings” and selecting “Wallet & Apple Pay.” By tapping on an individual Card, you can view the “Transactions” and manage the settings associated with that Card in Apple Pay.

For iPhone 6 or later, you can also view and manage your Card(s) in the Wallet app. When you select an individual Card, you can tap the “i” to get to the back of the Card, where you can view the “Transactions” and manage the settings associated with that Card in Apple Pay.

For Apple Watch, you can view and manage your Card(s) added to Apple Pay on Apple Watch within the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Simply tap on an individual Card to manage the settings associated with that Card in Apple Pay. The Apple Watch app will not display transaction detail or transaction history.

To view and manage your Card(s) added to Apple Pay on americanexpress.com, follow these steps:

1. Log into americanexpress.com with your User ID and Password

2. Select your eligible Card

3. Tap or click “Account Services,” then “Card Management,” and finally, “Manage Digital Wallets”

4. Locate the device and select:

  • “Suspend” to temporarily suspend making payments with your Card in Apple Pay using your device.
  • “Resume” to resume the functionality to make payments with your Card in Apple Pay. This will only appear as an option if you previously “Suspended” your Card on americanexpress.com.
  • “Remove” to remove your Card from Apple Pay. If you want to add your Card to Apple Pay again, please see FAQ above “How can I add my Card to Apple Pay?”

I’m getting notifications for my Card in Apple Pay on my device. What are these notifications and how can I turn them on/off?

After you have added your Card to Apple Pay, you will receive “Card Notifications” for your American Express Cards in Apple Pay on iPhone and iPad letting you know about purchases made with your plastic Card and purchases made in Apple Pay. You can turn your notifications on or off by adjusting the “Card Notifications” settings for each Card within the “Wallet & Apple Pay” section of your device “Settings.” Please keep in mind that by turning off your “Card Notifications,” you will no longer receive transaction notifications or other special messages from American Express. Your transaction history will also not appear in Apple Pay.

You will not receive specific "Card Notifications" for Cards added to Apple Pay for your Apple Watch. You may receive notifications on your Apple Watch if you have a Card added to Apple Pay on your paired iPhone and have push notifications enabled. If you do not want to receive these notifications on your Apple Watch, visit the notifications section under "General Settings" in the Apple Watch app on your supported device and unselect "Wallet & Apple Pay."

Please know that you will also not receive “Card Notifications” if you “Suspend” your Card (see FAQ above, “Where can I view and manage my Card(s) added to Apple Pay?” on how to suspend your Card). When you “Resume” your Card, you may see “Card Notifications” again if they were turned on prior to suspending your Card.

What are the transactions listed with my Card in Apple Pay?

American Express has enabled Card Members to see their last 10 purchases in the “Transactions” display of their Card in Apple Pay on iPhone or iPad. The “Transactions” display will show the last 10 purchases you’ve made with both your physical Card and Card using Apple Pay. You can turn “Transactions” off when you turn off your “Card Notifications” in the “Wallet & Apple Pay” section of your device “Settings.”

If you “Suspend” your Card (see FAQ above, “Where can I view and manage my Card(s) added to  Apple Pay?” on how to suspend your Card), you will not be able to view transactions made with that Card during the suspension period.  You will continue to be able to view transactions made prior to the suspension period.  You may view transactions made with that Card again after you “Resume” your Card.

Why is the information shown in Apple Pay different from my American Express Online Statement?

Apple Pay will only include your last 10 purchases. Please note that some of the listed transactions may be pending charges, which are temporary and are subject to change (for instance, pre-authorizations at restaurants and hotels). For all official statement information, please refer to your Card account information either on americanexpress.com or in the Amex Mobile app. If you suspect that there has been fraudulent activity on your account, please contact American Express Customer Care at the number on the back of your Card.

If I receive a replacement Card, do I need to update my Card information with Apple Pay?

No. Your device account number is connected to your new Card number automatically. You can use your Card in Apple Pay to make transactions before receiving your new plastic Card. If you do not want American Express to share this updated information, please call the number on the back of your Card.

If I have replaced my American Express Gift Card or my American Express Serve Card, do I need to update the Card information?
