1. About Amex Express Checkout

What is Amex Express Checkout?

Amex Express Checkout is the fast, secure way for American Express® Card Members who have an americanexpress.com account and hold an eligible American Express Card to complete purchases with participating online merchants and in participating merchant apps – just look for the “Amex Express Checkout” button in the merchant’s checkout experience. With Amex Express Checkout, Card Members can enter their americanexpress.com User ID and Password and authorize American Express to auto-fill payment and account information into a merchant’s online or mobile checkout page in just a few clicks. Additionally, in select participating merchant apps, Card Members with Touch ID-enabled Apple devices have the option to use Touch ID with Amex Express Checkout.

Who can use Amex Express Checkout and which Cards are eligible?

Amex Express Checkout is available to you if you meet the following requirements:

Do I need to register for Amex Express Checkout before using it?

You are not required to register separately for Amex Express Checkout, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria and hold an eligible Card, as described in the above FAQ “Who can use Amex Express Checkout and which Cards are eligible?”

Where can I use Amex Express Checkout?

Amex Express Checkout is available at select online merchants and in merchant apps that display the Amex Express Checkout button in their checkout experience. For a list of merchants that offer Amex Express Checkout, please visit americanexpress.com/expresscheckout

Is Amex Express Checkout secure?

Yes. Security and service are priorities for American Express. Amex Express Checkout uses security measures to keep your Card number and personal information secure during the Amex Express Checkout process. Amex Express Checkout uses multi-factor authentication to reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions, and your actual Card number is not shared with merchants. Instead, American Express issues a merchant-specific token that corresponds to your Card number. If a token were compromised, the fraud risk would be restricted to the specific merchant.

Are there any fees for using Amex Express Checkout?

There are no fees associated with using Amex Express Checkout. However, if you choose to receive a one-time access code via SMS, you may incur standard messaging fees from your mobile phone carrier.

What is a one-time access code or a Card ID (CID)? Why is it required?

For security purposes, American Express may require either a one-time access code or a CID to authenticate a Card Member.

If prompted, please select how you wish to receive the one-time access code, and then enter the code into the appropriate field to continue using Amex Express Checkout. Please know that a working internet and/or data connection is required to receive a one-time access code, and standard messaging rates from your mobile phone carrier apply.

My account is locked. How can I unlock it?

To prevent unauthorized access to your account, we will lock your online account if you enter an incorrect User ID, Password, CID, or one-time access code too many times. You can unlock your account by calling the number on the back of your Card for assistance.

How will an Amex Express Checkout purchase appear on my American Express statement?

All purchases completed with Amex Express Checkout will begin with “CHKOUT” on your American Express billing statement.
