How to Contact the Credit Bureaus & Other Resources

Manage your credit wisely with information to correct errors and more

Wondering what your FICO score is? Think there may be an error on your credit report? American Express is committed to helping you better manage your credit, which is why we’ve provided the resources you need to understand how credit scores work, how to improve your credit score, what your rights are in a credit dispute and how to report credit disputes. Much of this starts with knowing how to contact the credit bureaus responsible for your reporting.

Much of the information in the “Credit Bureau Resources” section of the American Express Financial Education Web site was developed by Fair Isaac Corporation – the company that invented the FICO® credit risk score that lenders use. This information is intended to help you understand the actions you can take to achieve and protect your overall financial health.

We have also included credit information as it relates to your American Express account, such as "Why Does American Express Send Me My FICO Score?" and "How Late Payments Affect Your Credit Score."

Compare information from all three credit bureaus

To learn more about your specific credit health, contact the three major credit bureaus for a report. It’s wise to contact all of these credit bureaus as they may have received differing information which could impact how your report is rendered by each bureau. You can request one free credit report from each bureau per year. You may occasionally want to contact all the credit bureaus at once to ensure your information is universally accurate.

You also have the right to a free credit report if you were denied credit or experienced any other adverse reaction based on a credit report. This will help you file a dispute or make the necessary updates to fix your credit and be in a better position next time.
