Uber - Frequently Asked Questions

About the Program

What is this program about?

American Express has teamed up with Uber to allow Card Members enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program to choose to earn 2x points or use points for eligible rides with Uber in the United States & Territories. To get started, Card Members will need to enroll their eligible Card within the Uber app, and then they will earn 2x points every time they use the enrolled Card (unless they're using points for the ride). Card Members who are authorized to redeem points will also have the option to use points to pay when requesting eligible rides.

Please note the program is available within the latest version of both the iOS and Android Uber apps.

What is Uber?

Uber is a mobile app that connects you with a driver at the push of a button. Request a ride using your phone and get a curbside pickup within minutes. Your Card is billed directly -- no reservations required, no cash needed. For more information, please visit uber.com.

Eligibility

What American Express Cards are able to participate in this program?

In order to earn 2x Membership Rewards points or use points for rides you must have an American Express Card enrolled in the U.S. Membership Rewards program that is current and not in default. Participation in the Membership Rewards program is only available to select American Express Card products issued by American Express. Click here to view eligible Cards.

Please note, once enrolled in the program you will only see the option to use points if you are the Basic Card Member (primary account holder) or are authorized by the Basic Card Member to redeem points (as an authorized Additional Card Member). Your account must also be in good standing, not in default at time of redemption, and have enough points to cover the full amount (including fare, tip & tolls; the tip may be applicable to taxi rides only). Your ride must also be requested within the United States & Territories.

If you are an eligible Additional Card Member who is not authorized, you will not be able to use points for Uber rides. But don't worry! You will still be able to earn 2x points for rides.

I'm an Additional Card Member. How do I know if I'm authorized to use points? If I'm not authorized, how do I become authorized?

Additional Card Members can earn Membership Rewards points but will not be able to redeem them unless the Basic Card Member enables them to do so. If you are an Additional Card Member and the Basic Card Member enables you to redeem points, then you will be considered an authorized Additional Card Member. To find out if you are an authorized Additional Card Member, please check with your Basic Card Member.

If you just became an authorized Additional Card Member or just enabled the Membership Rewards program on your Card, it may take a few days for Uber to recognize your new status and offer you the chance to redeem points or enroll in the program.

I'm a Basic Card Member. How do I find out or change the authorization status of my Additional Card Member (s)?

You can manage the authorization(s) of the Additional Card Members(s) on your Account by visiting the Card Authorization section on membershiprewards.com or by calling the number on the back of your Card.

My Card expired and I have a new Card, or lost my Card and I have a replacement one. Do I need to re-enroll for this program?

You will not need to re-enroll in the program if you received a replacement Card and your Card account number has not changed. If you received a new Card account number you will need to add your new Card to your Uber account and re-enroll in the program.

Getting Started

How do I sign-up for this program?

First, please check that you're using the latest version of the iOS and Android Uber apps. If not, you'll need to update the app by going to the Apple App store or Google Play store on your mobile device. You can also sign-up for Uber and /or enroll in the program by visiting get.uber.com/amex.

Once the app has been updated, if you have an eligible American Express Card on file with Uber, you’ll be prompted to enroll in the program the first time you open the Uber app. You will also have the option to enroll any eligible Card on file with Uber by visiting the “Payment” section of the app where you can click to “Learn More” and enroll in the program.

If you don’t have an eligible American Express Card on file with Uber, you will need to add one within the “Payment” section of the Uber app. Once you’ve added an eligible Card, you will see the option to enroll in the program.

My Card is registered to more than one Uber account. Do I need to enroll my Card separately on each account?

No. Once you enroll your Card, all Uber accounts using the enrolled Card will be able to earn 2x points. If the enrolled Card is also eligible to use points, the option will be available across all Uber accounts when using the Card. The point balance will be displayed across all registered accounts.

I have two or more American Express Cards enrolled in the Membership Rewards program. Can I enroll both Cards in the Uber program?

Yes, you can enroll any eligible Card by visiting the “Payment” section of the app where you can click “Learn More” to enroll in the program. You will need to enroll each eligible Card separately.

Please be sure to select one of the enrolled Cards when requesting a ride to earn 2x points or, if eligible, to have the option to use points for your ride.

Does Uber see or store my information?

If you enroll in the program and are eligible to use points for Uber rides, American Express will share your points balance with Uber each time you open the app so that you can see your points balance before you choose the “Use Points” option. Your updated point balance is shared with Uber each time you open the Uber mobile app or after certain periods of inactivity while the app is open.

If you no longer wish to have American Express share your points balance with Uber, simply visit the “Payment” section in the Uber app and select your enrolled Card. You will then be brought into the “Edit Payment” screen where you can toggle the option to use points for rides to “No”. If you choose “No” then you will be unable to use points for Uber rides but still earn 2x points when you use your enrolled Card. Please note you will need to adjust your payment settings for each enrolled Card separately.

Uber may store your Membership Rewards point balance information for short periods of time so that you may see your available point balance within the Uber app. If you choose to use points for a ride, American Express will check your point balance at the end of the ride to determine if you have enough points to cover the full amount of the ride (including fare, tip & tolls; the tip may be applicable to taxi rides only). Uber will also store receipts for rides where you used points, which identify the number of points used for a ride.

Using the Program

Now that I’m enrolled in the program with Uber, how do I get started?

Once you’re enrolled, please make sure that you select the enrolled Card to pay for your rides within the Uber app. You will automatically earn 2x points when you use the enrolled Card for your ride and your receipt will confirm you’ve “Earned 2x Points.” If you are authorized to use points, the “Confirmation” screen that appears before you request your ride will present the option to either earn 2x points or use points for your Uber ride. If you tap “Use Points,” the cost of your ride will be deducted from your Membership Rewards point balance. If you tap “Use Points,” and your ride total exceeds your available point balance, your Card will be charged the full fare in dollars. You will then earn 2x points for the fare.

Please note, if you are using the UberT service in New York City, you must pay your driver directly as payments are not made within the Uber app. When you pay the driver directly with your enrolled Card, outside of the Uber app, you will not earn 2x points or have the option to use points.

How do I know how many points I have?

If you are eligible to participate, your Membership Rewards point balance will be displayed when you select "Use Points" on the "Confirmation" screen before you request your ride, along with the Uber-specific conversion rate from points to dollars. Please note that the point balance you see before requesting the ride may not necessarily be the point balance that is available at the end of the ride.

You can also view your available point balance by logging in to your online rewards summary page at membershiprewards.com and clicking on the "Activity Detail" tab.

If I decide to use points for my Uber ride, how do I know how many points I will be using?

On the ride confirmation screen, you will see the “Fare Quote” option. If you have selected “Use Points,” tap “Fare Quote” and type in your destination address. Uber will then provide an estimated ride cost and an estimate of how many Membership Rewards points will be used. Please note that fares may vary due to traffic, weather and other factors.

If you have selected to earn 2x points on your Uber ride, the “Fare Quote” screen will display only the estimated cost of your ride, without an estimate of Membership Rewards points.

If you choose to use points for a ride, American Express will check your point balance at the end of the ride to determine if you have enough points to cover the full amount of the ride (including fare, tip & tolls; the tip may be applicable to taxi rides only).

Please note, when you choose to use points for your ride, you will redeem 100 points for every $1 in Uber services in the program. For example, if your ride costs $23.50, you will redeem 2,350 points.

How can I confirm that I earned 2x points for my Uber ride?

At the end of your trip, you will receive a receipt both in the Uber app and to the email address you have on file with Uber confirming that you’ve “Earned 2x Points.”

You can also visit membershiprewards.com and view the “Activity Detail” tab to view your point activity. You will typically receive the extra Membership Rewards points in your account within 10-12 weeks.

How can I confirm that I used points for my Uber ride?

At the end of your trip, you will receive a receipt both in the Uber app and to the email address you have on file with Uber. The receipts will confirm that you used points and the email receipt will include the specific point amount for the ride total.

Please keep in mind that your points redemption will be reflected on your billing statement and Membership Rewards statement. Your billing statement will show a transaction in dollars and an offsetting credit in the same amount as the transaction. Your Membership Rewards statement will show the deduction of points. You can review your point activity by logging into your online rewards summary page at membershiprewards.com and viewing the “Activity Detail” tab shortly after your transaction.

Please allow up to 48 hours for your billing statement credit and Membership Rewards points deduction.

If there is a processing error with your choice to use points, your Eligible Card will be charged and the corresponding credit will not be issued to the Enrolled Card account. In this event, if you would like to use points for your transaction please call the number on the back of your Card and we will be happy to assist you.

I enrolled in the program. How come I’m not seeing the option to use points for rides in the Uber app?

Once enrolled in the program, you will only earn 2x points and not see the option to use points for eligible rides if:

  • You are not authorized to redeem points
  • You are using a Windows device – the program is currently only available in the latest version of the iOS and Android Uber apps.
  • You previously opted out of the option to use points
  • You selected to pay with a digital wallet

You can confirm your enrollment in the program by visiting the “Payment” section of the Uber App. Your enrollment status will be indicated underneath your Card, stating either “Earning 2x Points” or “Earn 2x Points and Use Points.”

Can I use Membership Rewards points with an Uber account Credit, promo code or other Uber promotion?

Yes. If you are using an Uber account Credit or promo code, you will have the option to earn 2x points or use points with your enrolled American Express Card for the entire remaining cost of the ride once the promo code or Uber account Credit is deducted. You will also have the option to earn 2x points or use points with your enrolled Card to cover the cost of Uber promotions that require payment in-app and do not require a specific form of payment other than your enrolled Card.

Please note, if you have Credits with Uber, you will see “Credits” appear on the payment details section of the “Confirmation” screen when requesting your ride. These “Credits” apply to Uber and are not necessarily associated with your form of payment. You can select whether you’d like to use the Credits towards your ride by tapping “Credits” and toggling to “Apply Credits”.

Can I use points to cover a portion of my total ride cost?

No. You can only use points for the total cost of your ride. If you select "Use Points" and your ride total exceeds your available point balance, your Card will be charged the full fare in dollars. You will then earn 2x points for the fare.

Can I use Membership Rewards points if I use Uber's "Fare Split" feature to split the cost of my trip with friends?

Yes. You can use your enrolled Card to earn 2x points or use points to cover the cost of your portion of the ride. Just be sure to use the enrolled Card when on the "Confirmation" screen or by selecting the Card mid-trip via "Trip Settings."

I was incorrectly charged for my ride. What should I do?

If you feel that you were charged incorrectly for your ride, please contact Uber by replying to your email receipt, or use this link to contact Uber support.

I used Membership Rewards points for my ride by accident and would like to pay in dollars.

If you used Membership Rewards points by accident, please contact American Express Customer Care by calling the number on the back of your Card for assistance.

Will I still have the option to earn 2x points or use points for rides if I choose to pay with a Digital Wallet?

If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the Program, you will not receive the extra points. For example, your transaction will not qualify if your Enrolled Card is not the selected payment method for Uber services within the Uber App. In addition, in most cases, you will not receive the bonus points if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party.

Program Opt-Out

I no longer want the option to use points for Uber rides.

If you do not want to see the option to use points on future Uber rides, simply visit the "Payment" section and select your enrolled Card. You will then be brought to the "Edit Payment" screen, where you can toggle the option to use points for rides to "No." If you choose "No" then you will be unable to use points for Uber rides but still earn 2x points when you use your enrolled Card. Please note you will need to adjust your payment settings for each enrolled Card separately.

I previously opted out from using points, but would like to opt back in again.

If you hid the option to use points and want to see it again, you can enable the feature by visiting the “Payment” section and selecting your eligible American Express Card. You will then be brought to the “Edit Payment” screen, where you can toggle the option to use points for rides to “Yes.” By selecting “Yes,” you will earn 2x points and see the “Use Points” option for eligible rides. Please note you will need to adjust your payment settings for each enrolled Card separately.
