1. Who is covered by this Plan?

Basic and Additional American Express Card Members with an eligible American Express Card and a permanent residence within the 50 United States,  the District of Columbia, Guam, Common Wealth of the Northern Marianas, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands are eligible for Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance coverage. For residents of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, the Plan is underwritten by Tokio Marine Pacific Insurance Limited, Hagatna, Guam under Policy CRCB000000108. You must list yourself or an authorized driver on the rental agreement at the time of your rental.

2. How do I activate coverage under this Plan?
In order to activate Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance, you must sign the rental agreement, name yourself or an authorized driver as the renter, decline the full collision damage waiver ( or similar option ), or pay for a partial collision damage waiver offered by the rental company, and use your eligible Card to hold or place a deposit at the time rental is checked out and pay for the entire vehicle rental.

3. Is Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance primary or secondary insurance?
Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance is a secondary insurance plan. This means it reimburses the Card Member only for losses/expenses not covered by other plans, such as a partial collision damage waiver, any personal auto insurance, employer's auto insurance or reimbursement plan or other sources of insurance or indemnity.

4. What are the coverage limits?
Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance can provide coverage of up to $50,000 for theft of or damage to the rental vehicle. For Platinum Card® and Delta Reserve Card Members, Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance can provide coverage of up to $75,000 for theft of or damage to the rental vehicle. It can also provide secondary coverage for covered medical expenses* incurred as a result of an accident while riding in or getting into or out of the Rental Vehicle by the Card Member, Authorized Driver,  or Passenger of up to a maximum of $5,000 per person. It also provides secondary personal property coverage within the Rental Vehicle of up to $1,000 for the Card Member and Passenger, while the total coverage for all occupants is $2,000. It also provides accidental death and dismemberment benefits of $200,000** for the Card Member, and $20,000** for each Authorized Driver and Passenger. 

For any one accident the accidental injury and accidental death and dismemberment benefits are subject to a maximum payment of $300,000** for all Card Members, Authorized Drivers, and Passengers affected by the accident.

* Utah and Vermont Residents — medical expense coverage is provided on a primary basis. 
 
** New Hampshire Residents — 
  • Accidental death and dismemberment amount is up to $20,000 (Card Member) and $2,000 (Authorized Driver and Passenger) 
  • Any one accident maximum limit for accident injury, accidental death and dismemberment is up to $50,000 (for all Card Members, Authorized Drivers, and Passengers)

5. What vehicles are excluded?

Vehicle exclusions include  cargo vans, customized vehicles, vans with a seating capacity over 8 passengers, cube van or box truck, or any truck that has a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 lbs or more; rental vehicles which have been customized or modified from the manufacturer's factory specifications except for driver's assistance equipment for the physically challenged; rental vehicles used for hire or commercial purposes; leased or mini-leased vehicles; antique cars, which means cars that are 20 years old or have not been manufactured for 10 or more years; limousines; off-road vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds, recreational vehicles, golf or motorized carts, campers, trailers, any other vehicle which is not a rental vehicle. For Centurion® Members, please see americanexpress.com/CRLDICenturionTerms.  For Business Centurion® Members, please see americanexpress.com/CRLDIBusinessCenturionTerms.

6. Where am I covered?
Coverage is available internationally, except for vehicles rented in Australia, Italy, New Zealand and any country on the Office of Foreign Assets Control ("OFAC") sanctioned country list. Please note that, in the event any coverage provided by this policy would be in violation of US economic or trade sanctions, such coverage shall be null and void.

7. How long am I covered for?

Coverage is available for eligible Rental Vehicles when rented under a written rental agreement from a Rental Company for no more than 30 consecutive days after the Rental Vehicle was checked out.

8. Does this plan cover damage to other vehicles or injury to another person?
No, Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance does not provide liability insurance.

9. What is Loss of Use?
“Loss of Use” means the unavailability of a rental vehicle due to damage or theft and consequent loss of revenue by the rental company.

1. Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance is underwritten by AMEX Assurance Company, Administrative Office, Phoenix, AZ under Policy AX0925, Policy AX0925-PR, Policy AX0925-VI, or Policy CRLDI-IND. For residents of GU and MP, the Plan is underwritten by Tokio Marine Pacific Insurance Limited, Hagatna, Guam under Policy CRCB000000108. This benefit is not available to residents of American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Palau and the US Minor Outlying Islands. Coverage is determined by the terms, conditions, and exclusions of the Policies applicable to your Card and is subject to change with notice. This document does not supplement or replace the Policies. Coverage applies for the first 30 days of a vehicle rental and when rented from a rental company. Coverage is not available for ride-sharing companies that allow individuals to rent out their personal vehicle. This policy does not cover some vehicles, e.g. off-road vehicles, limousines and antique cars as described in the Terms and Conditions. This product provides secondary coverage. This means it pays eligible benefits not paid by any primary insurance that you have.
