No matter how much traction you’re getting from Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, you can’t network from home. Not really. Join, or at least visit your local community center or find a meet up group and meet some people face-to-face. Go to church, or a temple or wherever your community gathers to share ideas. The idea is not to find like minds, but to find real people. Trade shows count too. Have a Facebook and LinkedIn page. Get a Twitter account and socialize online, but seek out real people in the real world so you can share the value you have to offer.
I love sitting at home in front of my computer in my underwear. I tell myself I’m networking because I’m posting lots of comments on Facebook and prowling around the social media sites. But the fact is, no one sits at home in their underwear and really networks in a way that generates solid business leads. So put on some pants, and get some face-to-face time with other people. As Woody Allen said, 80 percent of success is showing up. And with so few people showing up nowadays, it is more like 95 percent of success is showing up. Shake some hands, eat some bagels and let people see you’re real.
