About Cookies and Similar Technologies

Effective Date: September 21, 2023

American Express is committed to providing you with full and transparent information about cookie and similar technologies use.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files which are placed on your computer, mobile device or tablet whenever you visit a website.

We use cookies for many different purposes, like helping you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences and generally improving your browsing experience. They can also help ensure that ads you see online are more relevant to you and your interests. The cookies we place on your computer cannot be used to retrieve any other data from your hard drive, to pass viruses to your computer, or capture your e-mail address. Each cookie is unique to your web browser and device. Some of the functions that cookies perform can also be achieved using alternative technology, which is why we use the term 'Cookies and similar technologies ' in this notice.

We will deploy these technologies to provide an online service more suited to the device you are connecting with, to assess the performance of our site, and to detect and prevent fraud. When you visit our website from any device we collect information about your use of this site, such as information about the device or browser you use to access the site, the way you interact with this site, your general location and your device's IP address. Our Online
Privacy Statement
includes more specific details about the Information We Collect.  You may not be able to initiate or complete some activities within our secure online services unless these Cookies and Similar Technologies are present. Cookies are also used to help remember your username and preferences, how well a website or app is performing or even allow content to be recommended to you.

Certain cookies and similar technologies contain personal information – for example, if you click on "Remember Me" when logging in to a website or app, a cookie will store your username and preferences.

Cookies and Similar Technologies used by American Express and their functions

Managing your Cookie and Similar Technologies preferences on the American Express Website

You can manage your Cookie and Similar Technologies preferences through adjusting your browser settings and/or through the American Express website (only available to residents of Quebec), as follows:

a) Through your browser settings

Amex Canada cookies do not store sensitive information such as your name, address or payment details; they simply hold the 'key' or 'id' that, once you're signed in, is associated with this information. However, if you'd prefer to restrict, block or delete cookies from our websites or any other website, you can use your browser to do this. Each browser is different and your browser’s ‘Help’ function will show you how to do this.

Please note that if you choose to disable essential, functionality and performance cookies, it will affect how the Amex Canada website works. For example, while you will still be able to view the public website, you won't be able to log on to our secure journey, check your account balances, or make payments.

b) Through the American Express Website (only available to residents of Quebec)

Setting cookie preferences is only available to residents of Quebec. If you are not a resident of Quebec and disable any of the cookie categories, your preferences will not be saved.

You may choose to either ‘Accept’ or ‘Decline’ functional, performance and marketing Cookies or Similar Technologies from our site in the banner that appears the first time you visit our site or by going to the Set Cookie Preferences section in our Privacy Centre.

Any choice you make will not delete any existing Cookies and Similar Technologies previously placed on your computer by our site, but will prevent further cookies and Similar Technologies from being placed.

If you wish to delete the Cookies and Similar Technologies that are currently stored on your computer, you cannot do this through our site and must instead do this through your browser settings (see below).

Any choice you make on our site will be stored and applied for one year from the date you make the choice, or until you delete all existing Cookies and Similar Technologies through your web browser settings (because if you do this, it will also delete the record of your choice). The next time you access our site after the expiry of the one year period or after deleting your cookies, you will be prompted to provide your choice again.

Use of other websites

When you use links to other websites which we provide to you, we recommend that you read the privacy and cookies and similar technologies policies on those websites.

Please note that any choice about cookies and similar technologies that you may have provided on an American Express site will not be honoured on non-American Express websites.

Cookie and similar technologies as part of emails

We use cookies and similar technologies to understand whether emails we send to you are opened or not and which links or URLs you might click on within those emails. We do this to determine the effectiveness of our communications and to help us better tailor emails and online advertising we may serve you in the future.

You can disable cookie and similar technologies for emails by changing your device or email program settings (generally, you can do this by turning off ‘auto image loading’).

We may change this Notice from time to time. When we make changes, we will update the “Effective Date” at the top of this page. Any changes to this Notice will become effective when posted.
