3 Days in Amsterdam
Canal Boat Rides, Culture, and Street Food
Sunrise over the Canal District, Amsterdam, Netherlands
April 30, 2026
Amsterdam brings to mind townhouses with gabled roofs, an innovative canal system, and locals whizzing around by bicycle. Fresh off its 750th anniversary, the Dutch capital continues to look forward, building on a record of tolerance and inclusion that includes pioneering LGBTQIA+ rights.
One of Europe’s best-loved cities, Amsterdam attracts all comers with its mix of family-friendly parks and cultural attractions, grande dame hotels and inventive fine dining, and wild nightlife.
Classic things to do in Amsterdam range from marveling at Dutch masterpieces to shopping at the Flower Market to indulging in stroopwafels and bitterballen. If you’re visiting in spring, tulip season adds another layer of color—especially at Keukenhof Gardens, about 40 minutes from the city center.
For a less-touristed take, venture to the Eastern Docklands and the Noord neighborhood, where a sprawling former shipyard has been remade as an arts hub. Rent bikes for a leisurely ride around Vondelpark or head south along the scenic Amstel River to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel for a quaint, quieter vibe.
Get inspired by our recommended three-day Amsterdam itinerary, and learn about the benefits you can enjoy throughout your journey when you book through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel AppTM.

Best Time to Visit
Spring (March to May) is an ideal time for good weather and taking in tulip season. Similarly, early fall offers mild temperatures and manageable levels of crowds. Summer brings the highest temperatures and most sun-filled days, though it’s often the busiest and most expensive; on the contrary, winter tends to showcase the most affordable prices, but daylight hours are short and the weather can get quite cold.

There are multiple restaurants and complimentary bikes for exploring like a local.

Caffeinate at Moods
Fend off any jet lag and fuel up for sightseeing with a stop at Moods Coffee Corner (moods.eu). A 10-minute walk from the Centraal train station, this quality-focused coffee spot uses carefully roasted beans to prepare a variety of caffeinated beverages, and also offers a variety of homemade pastries, breakfast and lunch dishes, and fresh smoothies.
Explore the Canal District by Boat
Amsterdam’s Canal District, known locally as Grachtengordel, is one of the busiest neighborhoods, with myriad bars, restaurants, and hotels. It’s the picture-perfect place to begin orienting yourself—and boat is the way to go. During a canal tour, learn about Amsterdam's rich history while taking in its best views from the comfort of a classic narrowboat (live or audio guide included).
Restaurant de Belhamel
Continue the canal-viewing theme with lunch at Restaurant de Belhamel (belhamel.nl), a 7-minute walk from the city’s canal tour boat hub in front of the Centraal Station. It looks as good as it tastes, with chic art nouveau-inspired decor, patterned wallpaper, and a cozy four-seater patio, plus a variety of French, Italian, and classic Dutch and Flemish offerings. Walk off your meal by strolling the nearby vibrant Jordaan neighborhood.
History Lessons in Jordaan
Keep the momentum going with a visit to the Anne Frank House (annefrank.org), located on the canal at Prinsengracht, a short walk from Belhamel. One of the most famous Amsterdam attractions, the museum provides biographical insight into the life of wartime diarist Anne Frank. It’s a small, popular museum, so plan to book tickets in advance; they go on sale every Tuesday at 10am CEST for a visit six weeks later.
For an equally thought-provoking experience, consider Verzetsmuseum (Dutch Resistance Museum) (verzetsmuseum.org). Founded in 1984, the Verzetsmuseum provides an in-depth understanding of what life was like in Amsterdam during World War II, including a visual and audible recreation of the streets’ atmosphere under German occupation.
Put Your Finger on the Pulse of Dutch Cuisine
Restaurant 212
Situated in a classic canal house in the center of the city, Restaurant 212 (212.amsterdam) is an award-winning restaurant spearheaded by Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot. Expect meticulously executed cuisine in a trendy, open-kitchen space with top-of-the-line produce.
Café Kompleet
Café Kompleet (cafekompleet.nl) is an all-day neighborhood café known for its modern twists on classic Dutch dishes, as well as its robust wine list, all served up in a warm environment. While breakfast and lunch are also served daily, prioritize dinnertime to try the 3-course Chef's choice menu—at €39 (US$42) a person, it’s one of the best deals in Amsterdam.
Score One-of-a-Kind Goods at Het Faire Oosten
After breakfast at your hotel, head over to Het Faire Oosten, which translates to House of Impact (hetfaireoosten.nl). The shop stocks a variety of brands with an emphasis on craftsmanship. Peruse men’s, women’s, and children’s fashion, as well as artisanal home goods, jewelry, stationery, and baby gifts.
Dip In for Casual Classics
Vleminckx de Sausmeeste
Post-shopping fix, fuel up on the go with a cone of French fries at Vleminckx de Sausmeester (vleminckxdesausmeester.nl), one of Amsterdam’s most beloved stands for fried potatoes. Choose your sauces and savor your fries al fresco along the narrow little street Voetboogstraat. Mayonnaise and barbecue are classics; for something different, try the oorlog, a mix of mayonnaise, satay sauce, and onions. Cash only.
Aneka Rasa
For an authentic taste of Rijsttafel—casual Indonesian dining that translates to “rice table” from Dutch—look no further than Aneka Rasa (anekarasa.nl). A longtime fixture of the city center, the restaurant offers a tropical ambiance and small plates meant for sharing. Aneka Rasa, which means “various taste” in Bahasa Indonesian, pays homage to the country’s 17,000+ islands, once under Dutch colonial rule and each with its own flavors.
Marvel at Dutch Masterpieces
Take in the beauty of the canals with a 15-minute walk to Amsterdam’s Museumkwartier, where you’ll find the Van Gogh Museum (vangoghmuseum.nl) and Rijksmuseum (pronounced “rikes,” rijksmuseum.nl). While the former is dedicated to the life and works of its eponymous Post-Impressionist painter, the latter is the country’s national museum and highlights the arts and history of the Netherlands.
Located beneath the Rijksmuseum, the Rijks Walkway is a covered passageway that permits walking—or cycling—through the actual structure of the museum’s building. Commonly referred to as ‘The Passage,’ the pathway is considered one of the city’s most distinct cycling features.

Sweet Treats at Hans Egstorf or Peacock Alley
If you don’t want to spoil your appetite before dinner but are craving a snack, stop at one of the many stroopwafel vendors near the hotel before freshening up. Hans Egstorf (stroopwafel.com) is just around the corner and a tempting option for perfectly crunchy stroopwafels with a variety of dips and toppings. For a heartier—and more luxurious—pre-dinner pause, indulge in a variety of pastries, small sandwiches, and freshly brewed tea (or bubbly Champagne) at Peacock Alley within the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam.
Unwind at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam’s Guerlain Spa
Pre-dinner, relax and recharge at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam’s Guerlain Spa. Known for its world-class treatments and turquoise-hued indoor pool, the space provides a tranquil oasis. The Guerlain Spa & Pool is open to hotel guests and non-guests; non-guests who book a 90-minute treatment are offered complimentary access to the spa’s pool, sauna, and steam room.
Soulful Dining
Restaurant Wils
Restaurant Wils (restaurantwils.nl) opened in 2020, and the accolades were quick to follow for the innovative cuisine spearheaded by chef Joris. Available as a six-course tasting menu or à la carte, the majority of Wils’ dishes are prepared over a series of fireplaces, wood ovens, and grills, with wine pairing options available.
De Sluyswacht
Located in a former private residence built in 1695 for the local sluyswacht—that is, the person operating the nearby lock—De Sluyswacht (sluyswacht.nl) serves up no-frills, pub-inspired fare in a cozy ambiance. Expect Dutch bar favorites such as bitterballen (deep-fried meatballs), fries, and around 10 beers on tap at all times, paired with a beautiful canal-side setting.
End the Night with Live Music
Whatever live music you fancy, Amsterdam has a venue for it. Royal Concertgebouw is the home of one of the most storied classical music orchestras, with stellar acoustics and roots dating back to 1888 (concertgebouw.nl). A hub for the Netherlands’ live jazz scene, Bimhuis is a striking black box venue (bimhuis.nl) while Paradiso is a popular music venue for rock and pop concerts in a former church (paradiso.nl)
Explore Amsterdam Noord at NDSM
Fifteen minutes by car from The Hoxton Lloyd Amsterdam, NDSM Wharf (iamsterdam.com) deserves a spot on your list of things to do in Amsterdam. It presents a lively community and cultural hub of artists, restaurants, and bars on the banks of the River IJ. Situated in a former shipyard, NDSM has hosted a number of performances, festivals, exhibitions, and other events over the past few years, all against a vast, post-industrial backdrop.
Enjoy a Soothing Spread at Breman Brasserie
After a morning checking out Amsterdam Noord, make your way back to The Hoxton Lloyd Amsterdam for lunch at Breman Brasserie. It draws inspiration from turn-of-the-century European and South American dishes, among them, classic Dutch toasties, crispy cod sandwiches, rib-eye steak with chimichurri, and a raw bar with seafood platters and ceviche.
Bike Through Vondelpark
Amsterdam’s largest park, Vondelpark (amsterdam.info), is a great place to get a breath of fresh air. Enjoy a stroll, jog, or snag a bicycle to explore the park’s vast grounds. Keep your eye out for a statue of the namesake poet Vondel, a domed open-air music theater, and a kids’ playground near Groot Melkhuis, one of a few dining options.
Food and Culture Walking Tour
Over the course of 3.5 hours, you’ll be treated to a guide’s anecdotes and local insights, as well as samples of classic Dutch foods like kibbeling (battered chunks of fish) and bitterballen (apple pie). Walk them off as you pass major attractions like the Royal Palace and Begijnof—a quaint collection of houses arranged around a courtyard—and tool around the Flower Market, known locally as Bloemenmarkt. The market’s roots go back to 1862, when farmers brought in blooms on barges; no longer floating, the stalls are perched on piles. You can buy tulips in spring and bulbs, seeds, and kitschy sounenirs all year long.

Wander De 9 Straatjes
Translating to “Nine Streets,” De 9 Straatjes (de9straatjes.nl) is one of Amsterdam’s most charming areas for wandering, shopping, and grabbing a coffee or quick bite. Conveniently located in the heart of the city, this quaint 3x3 neighborhood is where you’ll likely snap your most picturesque shots, as well as procure some of your best souvenirs—and vintage items—to take home.
The Grand Finale
Jansz
Grab a drink at the Art Deco counter of Pulitzer’s Bar and then head seamlessly on to dinner at the Pulitzer Amsterdam’s restaurant Jansz, which puts a modern spin on Dutch cooking. The restaurant derives its name from Volkert Jansz, a 17th-century cloth merchant known for his refined taste and discerning sense of style. The restaurant highlights seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients with each course served.
Choux
Closer to the Hoxton Lloyd Amsterdam, head to Choux (choux.nl). Overseen by Merijn van Berlo, the restaurant’s thoughtful, vegetable-forward cuisine is as complex as it is tasty, and pairs beautifully with the well-curated selection of organic and natural wines. The restaurant offers a 5-course tasting menu for €75 (US$81) daily, with a 4-course option available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for €65 (US$70).
