Kensington Cares in the Masai Mara
Kensington Cares is an initiative designed to support education in developing countries, including Kenya, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their efforts have helped to fund facilities at two schools in the Masai Mara: Oloosinon Primary School and Kensington Hall Oloosinon Secondary School for Girls.
On this day, visit one of these schools and see an example of the positive impact that tourism can have by enabling the education of children from local communities. You will spend time with the school staff and teachers to get a glimpse of how the school operates.
Anti-Poaching Patrol
Loisaba Conservancy in partnership with The Nature Conservancy has its own dedicated anti-poaching team, comprised of four sniffer dogs–Warrior, Machine, Memusi and Nanyokie–and their human handler team. Every morning their dedicated handlers take them on different routes, keeping them fit and ensuring they are always ready to go.
Whether they’re driven out into the bush to pick up the scent or they need to jump into a plane and help further flung neighbors, the dogs and their handlers are always prepared. Guests staying here at Loisaba have the opportunity to witness an anti-poaching demonstration, which will show how the sniffer dogs track poachers to help support the conservancy and protect wildlife.
A Day of Conservation
Mara Elephant Project & Ol Chorro Rhino Sanctuary
Get a behind-the-scenes look at all the hard work done to preserve wildlife by the different conservancies in the Masai Mara, a National Reserve in southwestern Kenya, along the Tanzanian border.
Start your day with a visit to the Mara Elephant Project. This stop includes a presentation given by one of Mara Elephant Project’s core staff members, as well as a tour of headquarters to learn about their efforts to save and protect wildlife, communities and the natural habitat. You may see evidence from poaching, such as bushmeat snares, spear arrows collected from the field, an elephant skull or elephant collars.
Continue your day to Kilileoni Hill within the Mara Ol Chorro Conservancy to visit a small rhino sanctuary where guests may have the unique opportunity to walk among the three resident white rhinos — a rare treat. During this educational visit, meet one of the rhino rangers and learn more about these modern-day dinosaurs and why they need our protection.
