Reuniting Opposing Forces with Nguyen Hong My

While attending engineering college as a young man, Hong My was asked to take a test; a test that would change the course of his life. Following the exam, he was sent to flight school in Russia, returning later as one of only 120 qualified fighter pilots, and then he took to the skies to defend his country.

On this day, you will have the opportunity to hear his incredible story and spend time with him in his home, all while viewing old photographs, books and testimonials of his courage and bravery.

His war stories are fascinating but his post-war story is possibly even more interesting. Years after the Vietnam War, Hong My was introduced to the U.S. pilot who shot him down during his years fighting. Thirty years after the war they are now the best of friends in a heartwarming story that showcases the power of the human spirit to build bonds across lines that all-too-often divide.

Two people with their back to the camera, both wearing conical nón dang hats row a small wooden boat towards docks lined by yellow buildings.

Private Tour

Exploring Tributaries of the Mekong

Begin the day with a drive to Ben Tre, approximately 90 minutes from Ho Chi Minh City, where you’ll board a boat that cruises along a branch of the Mekong River. After a short ride, you’ll disembark and set out on a light walk through a small community to visit a brickwork factory where bricks are made by hand.

Your boat trip continues to My Long village where you’ll depart to walk through the hamlet to see how rice paper is made and taste rice cakes. Following the Cai Son canal, you’ll wind through a coconut jungle, visit a coconut workshop, have a look at the stages of coconut processing from husking to prizing out the peel by hand.

Next, set down a small waterway and stop at a buzzing bee garden, enjoy some fruits, honey tea and listen to local music. Visit a candy mill and enjoy some sweet treats before walking to visit a farmer's house where traditional sleeping mats are made.

From here, you’ll have the choice to either bike on rural tracks, ride on a xe loi (rickshaw) through a range of coconut groves and vegetable patches, or to simply relax at your leisure. Now on a rowboat, head along a canal lined with shady palm trees and stop for lunch at the Green Garden Riverside Restaurant. As the tour comes to an end, head back to the main pier in Ben Tre by motorboat to meet your driver, and then return to Ho Chi Minh City.
