Live the World with American Express
American Express launched an arts initiative in South Africa that celebrates the vibrancy of Africa and the welcoming spirit South Africans are known for. Over 550 artists submitted artwork that creatively responded to the theme "The vibrant African marketplace - everyone's welcome." After careful selection, 5 winners of the Amex ZA Graphic Arts Challenge were selected to win R100 000 and appear on signage for American Express-accepting merchants.
Mark Modimola is a South African artist based in Johannesburg working in digital art, drawing and painting. His works explore the rhythms of African identity, carrying a spirit that emphasizes the supernatural experience of blackness.
Nene Mahlangu is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. As the 2023 program curator for Design Indaba Emerging Creatives, Mahlangu's work explores African identity, fashion, and spirituality. She has a postgraduate certificate in Design from UMUZI, a BSc in Medical Sciences and has exhibited her work at local and international art fairs, including the Venice International Art Fair in 2020.
Hlulani Trevor Hlongwane is a Vaal-based Illustrator & Graphic Designer. He studied Communication Design at the University of Johannesburg and obtained his BA qualification in 2020. He is also the founder of a streetwear startup called Studio Drab.
Michelle Ewany Opani is a Congolese artist who spent most of her childhood in Pretoria and matriculated from Woodhill College. Currently residing in Alberton, she worked as an admin assistant at a primary school while pursuing her passion for visual arts and illustration.
Althea Botha is an artist and illustrator based in Johannesburg. She studied fine arts and ventured into illustration after finishing her studies. She has a huge passion
for character art and portrait illustration.
