Confirming your identity

Before we can finalise your Card application, we’ll need to confirm your identity. You can do this quickly and securely as you’ll be prompted to complete our online ID check during the Card application process.

What ID do I need?

Your current Australian driver’s licence can be used to verify your identity. We’ll need to know:

  • Your driver’s licence number (not the card number)
  • The state it was issued in
  • The expiry date

How it works

  1. Apply for your selected American Express Card.
  2. Enter and check the personal details in your application. It is important to use your full legal name.
  3. Complete the rest of the application and submit when ready.
  4. We’ll automatically check the details entered in your application against external data sources to verify your identity.

Sometimes we might be unable to verify your identity online. This could be because the details entered don’t match exactly, you’ve recently moved addresses or due to another reason. In this case, we’ll be in touch once your application has been submitted to collect the relevant documentation.

Verifying your income

For us to assess a new Card application or a credit limit increase (if you already have an existing American Express Credit Card), we need to understand your financial situation by verifying your income.

Each American Express Card has a minimum income requirement. When choosing your Card, please ensure you meet the minimum income requirement before applying.

How is my income verified?

During the application process, we will obtain your consent to verify your income using a third party service. This is an instant online alternative to providing email or paper copies of your pay-slips and could help fast-track your application.

You may also be asked to provide proof of income (for example, pay slips or tax returns) using the document upload service at the end of your application or email them to quoting your reference number. These methods will take longer than using the online income verification service.

What is a credit assessment?

As part of your application for a new Credit Card we’ll need to carry out an evaluation to ensure you are able to meet the obligations of the Credit Card contract.

Helping to establish a good credit history

Some things that credit providers may look at when reviewing your credit file are:

  • The type of credit you have enquired about
  • How often you apply for credit and how much
  • Any overdue accounts listed against your name

To maintain a good credit history, you should always pay your bills on time. If you are moving house, ensure you provide your lenders with your new address and other contact information to avoid late or missed payments.
