Before you apply for an American Express Credit Card, you’ll need to have on hand, some important personal and financial information.
Here’s the information we’ll need from you before you start your application:
Once you have chosen a Card, read the Terms and Conditions, then click the ‘Apply now’ button on your chosen Credit Card page to begin your application.
If you have any questions along the way, you can call 1300 557 743 toll free Monday to Friday between 8.00 am and 6.30 pm AEST.
Provided you have all of the required information to hand, your application should take less than 10 minutes to complete, and we will provide you with a response in 60 seconds.
Before we can finalise your Card application, we’ll need to confirm your identity. You can do this quickly and securely as you’ll be prompted to complete our online ID check during the Card application process.
What ID do I need?
Your current Australian driver’s licence can be used to verify your identity. We’ll need to know:
How it works
Sometimes we might be unable to verify your identity online. This could be because the details entered don’t match exactly, you’ve recently moved addresses or due to another reason. In this case, we’ll be in touch once your application has been submitted to collect the relevant documentation.
For us to assess a new Card application or a credit limit increase (if you already have an existing American Express Credit Card), we need to understand your financial situation by verifying your income.
Each American Express Card has a minimum income requirement. When choosing your Card, please ensure you meet the minimum income requirement before applying.
How is my income verified?
During the application process, we will obtain your consent to verify your income using a third party service. This is an instant online alternative to providing email or paper copies of your pay-slips and could help fast-track your application.
You may also be asked to provide proof of income (for example, pay slips or tax returns) using the document upload service at the end of your application or email them to newaccountsaustralia@aexp.com quoting your reference number. These methods will take longer than using the online income verification service.
As part of your application for a new Credit Card we’ll need to carry out an evaluation to ensure you are able to meet the obligations of the Credit Card contract.
A credit assessment is a process carried out by American Express to ensure you are able to meet the obligations of a Credit Card contract. Some of things we look at:
Your credit history information is obtained by reviewing your ‘credit file’, a record of information that is held by Equifax, a credit reporting body. To receive a copy of your credit file, please visit the Equifax website at mycreditfile.com.au.
When reviewing your credit file, credit providers may consider things like: the type of credit you have applied for; how often and how much credit you have applied for; any overdue accounts or defaults listed against you; instances you have not met obligations with a credit provider, which can include bills for your telephone or Credit Card.
Credit files are protected by the Privacy Act, and access, use, and disclosure are subject to obligations.
Your credit history:
When you open an account with a utility company, or a telephone service provider, or you apply for a loan or your first Credit Card, you begin to establish a credit history. The way you manage your accounts may impact your credit history. Paying bills on time and avoiding payment defaults will assist in improving your credit history.
Many credit providers may review your credit history when they review your application for personal loans, a mortgage, and Cards. A good credit history will help when applying for future credit facilities or products.
Some things that credit providers may look at when reviewing your credit file are:
To maintain a good credit history, you should always pay your bills on time. If you are moving house, ensure you provide your lenders with your new address and other contact information to avoid late or missed payments.
