Which documents do you need to verify your income?

 

Before your application is finalised, it’s important your income is verified. You’ll need to upload the documents which match the source of income on your application.

For a smooth next step, remember:

 

- Files must be individual PDFs (please don’t combine files)
- Only upload quality PDFs of original documents which can be read clearly
- Individual files must be under 10MB and total uploads under 30MB
- Documents must show your name, income details, employer and NZBN – if applicable
- You cannot use bank statements to verify your income

Payslips

 

You can verify your income using payslips that show at least three months of income.
The number of payslips required depends on how often you’re paid:

 

Full time or part time

 

  • Paid weekly: four payslips with one dated within 15 days of your application date
  • Paid fortnightly: three payslips with one dated within one month of your application date
  • Paid monthly: two payslips with one dated within two months of your application date

 

Or a single payslip that includes Year to Date (YTD) income for at least three months if you have been in your current role at least the entire financial year.

 

Casual

 

  • Paid weekly: eight payslips with one dated within 15 days of your application date
  • Paid fortnightly: four payslips with one dated within one month of your application date
  • Paid monthly: two payslips with one dated within two months of your application date

 

Or a single payslip that includes Year to Date (YTD) income for at least three months if you have been in your current role at least the entire financial year.

 

Bonus/commission payments

 

If your total income includes bonus or commission payments, you will need to provide the following as verification:

 

Full time or part time employees

 

  • Bonus paid weekly: Provide four payslips with bonus included
  • Bonus paid fortnightly: Provide three payslips with bonus included
  • Bonus paid monthly: Provide two payslips with bonus included
  • Bonus paid quarterly: Provide two payslips with bonus included
  • Bonus paid yearly: Provide two payslips with bonus included

 

Casual employees

 

  • Bonus paid weekly: Provide eight payslips with bonus included*
  • Bonus paid fortnightly: Provide four payslips with bonus included*
  • Bonus paid monthly: Provide two payslips with bonus included*
  • Bonus paid quarterly: Provide two payslips with bonus included
  • Bonus paid yearly: Provide two payslips with bonus included

 

*Note: At least one bonus payment must be dated within two months of your application date.

 

Employment Contract

 

Your employment contract can verify your income if it clearly states your annual salary. You may also need to provide payslips – based on how long you’ve been employed.

 

Employed for under 2-months

 

  • Employment contract is sufficient

 

Employed for over 2-months

 

  • Paid weekly: Employment contract plus one payslip - from within 15 days of your application date
  • Paid fortnightly: Employment contract plus one payslip – from within one month of your application date
  • Paid monthly: Employment contract plus one payslip – from within two months of your application date

 

Tax Assessment from IRD

 

You can verify your income using a Tax Assessment showing your total gross or net pay. It can be one of the following:

 

  • 12-month summary from myIR
  • Most recent IR3 tax statement

 

KiwiSaver statement

 

If you are retired, your KiwiSaver Statements can verify your income based on how often you’re paid:

 

  • Monthly: two months from application date
  • Quarterly: four months from application date
  • Yearly: 14 months from application date

 

Note: Your document must be an official statement from that superannuation fund and must display the closing balance for that period.

 

Letter from accountant

 

You can use a letter from a Registered Accountant to verify your income if you are self employed, retired, have investment or rental income, or if your income type is complex. The letter must:

 

  • Be issued within the last three months
  • Be on the accountant’s company letterhead
  • Include your full name
  • Clearly state your income source (for example, self‑employed income, rental income, investment income, or other complex income types)

 

Rental/investment statement

 

If you’ve had income from a rental or investment for 3+ months you can use it to verify your income. Just submit rental statements, contracts, ledgers, or a letter from a real estate agent or accountant. How many documents will depend on how often you’re paid:

 

  • Paid weekly: Proof of four payments – at least one from within 15 days
  • Paid fortnightly: Proof of three payments – at least one from within one month
  • Paid monthly: Proof of two payments – at least one from within two months
  • Paid quarterly: Proof of one payment - from within four months of your application date
  • Paid yearly: Proof of one payment - from within 14 months of your application date

 

Eligible documents

Government payments

 

You can provide a government payment document as long as it clearly shows your payment frequency, payment amount, your name, income details and NZBN – where applicable. This could include:

 

  • Work and Income (MSD) benefits
  • Working for Families
  • Child Support
  • Accommodation Supplement/Public Housing
  • Youth Payment/Young Parent Payment

 

You cannot use bank statements to verify your income.
