Choosing the right
American Express® Card for your next international trip
Learn about American Express Credit Cards for international travel
Whether you’re exploring a new culture, trying local cuisine, or reconnecting with family and friends across the globe, having the right Card to travel can make all the difference.
American Express Cards are designed with international travellers in mind, offering benefits such as Card protection and travel insurance1 on eligible Cards. Terms, conditions and exclusions apply (such as maximum age-limits, pre-existing medical conditions and cover limits). When you’re using American Express overseas, you can also rely on our Fraud Protection Guarantee2, our 24/7 Card support and worldwide acceptance.
Benefits of using a Card while travelling abroad
Using a Card can simplify your payments overseas, reduce the need to carry large sums of cash and give you access to extra benefits.
Convenience and security
Carrying large amounts of cash can be both inconvenient and risky. A Card can help you access funds and helps protect your purchases through 24/7 fraud monitoring.

Access to international assistance services
Card issuers usually have global customer service to help with issues like a missing or stolen card. If a problem arises, you can often get quick guidance and arrange a replacement card to ensure you’re never left without a way to pay.
If your Amex Card is lost or stolen, American Express can arrange to get you a replacement Card virtually anywhere you are in the world, 24/7.
How to use your Amex Card abroad
If you’re new to using Amex internationally, it’s wise to understand how fees, currencies and security measures work before your trip.
Understanding foreign transaction fees
For each purchase in a foreign currency, American Express charge a currency conversion fee of 3% of the Australian Dollar amount of the foreign charge5.
Choosing the right currency for purchases
It often saves costs to opt for the local currency whenever possible to avoid hidden markups. If asked whether you’d like to pay in Australian dollars or the local currency, choosing local currency usually has a better exchange rate. Reviewing receipts and staying mindful of surcharges can also help prevent surprises.
Tips for safe Card usage
Keep a close eye on your statements and use secure payment locations to reduce the risk of fraud. Avoid handing your Card over if you can’t see how it’s being processed.
Managing Card issues overseas
Save your Card’s international contact numbers in your phone. If something goes wrong, like a declined Card, customer service can typically offer quick solutions. A backup payment method is also useful in case you travel to places with limited Card acceptance.

American Express is not the insurer, does not guarantee or hold the rights under the group policy on trust for Card Members and does not act on behalf of Chubb or as its agent. 2. Provided that you do not contribute to or unreasonably delay reporting any misuse of your Account and you have complied with your Card Conditions, you will not be held liable for any unauthorised charges.
3. Membership Rewards Program.
Subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Membership Rewards program available here. Merchants classified as "government" include the Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Postal Corporation (Australia Post), Federal/State and Local Government bodies. Industry specific earn rate may apply when you use a payment account, payment aggregator, services of a third party or online retailers that sell goods for another merchant. For example a payment made to Local Government bodies processed through a payment aggregator may earn rates at the government earn rate. There may be tax implications associated with participation in the Membership Rewards program. You are advised to check with your accountant or tax adviser for further information.
4. American Express Travel Online.
To earn or redeem Membership Rewards points, Cards must be enrolled to the American Express Membership Rewards program, and your Card Account must be in good standing. To redeem Membership Rewards points with American Express Travel Online, you need to have available limit on your Card for the full transaction amount of the booking. You will then receive a statement credit within 3 business days for your points redemption. If the credit isn’t on the same statement as the transaction, it should appear on your next statement. Please pay all amounts due each month. You will earn Membership Rewards points on the full dollar amount charged to your Card. All bookings are subject to the terms and conditions of our Membership Rewards Program.
5. Currency Conversion Fees.
Currency Conversion Fees for Charge Cards. If you make a charge in a currency other than Australian dollars, that charge will be converted into Australian dollars. The conversion will take place on the date the charge is processed by us, which may not be the same date you make the charge. If the charge is in U.S. dollars, it will be converted directly into Australian dollars. In all other cases, it will first be converted into U.S. dollars and then into Australian dollars. However, you will only be charged one currency conversion fee. Unless a specific rate is required by law, conversion rates will be used based on interbank rates selected from customary industry sources on the business day prior to the processing date. If charges are converted by third parties prior to being submitted to us, any conversions made by those third parties will be at rates and may include a fee selected by them.
Currency Conversion Fees for Credit Cards. For each Charge submitted to us in a currency other than Australian Dollars (a ‘Foreign Charge’), on the day we process the Foreign Charge we will:
- Convert it to US Dollars first (unless it was submitted to us in US Dollars);
- Convert the US Dollar amount into Australian Dollars; and
- Apply a single non-refundable currency conversion fee to the Australian Dollar amount of the Foreign Charge.
We use exchange rates from customary industry sources, or a specific rate if required by law. We use the exchange rate from the weekday prior to the day we process the Foreign Charge (or two weekdays prior for Foreign Charges processed on 1 January and 25 December). The exchange rate we use may be higher or lower than the exchange rate available on the day you made the Foreign Charge, and exchange rate fluctuations can be significant.
When making a Charge in a foreign currency you may have the choice to allow a third party to convert the Charge into Australian Dollars at the point of sale. If you choose this option, then that third party will:
- Determine the exchange rate and any commission or fees payable for the currency conversion; and
- Submit that Charge to us in Australian Dollars, meaning we will not convert the Charge or apply currency conversion fee
You acknowledge that any refund of a Foreign Charge may be different to the Foreign Charge amount originally processed on your Account. The difference is generally because:
- the refund and Foreign Charge may be processed on different days with different rates;
- we do not apply any currency conversion fee to refunds of Foreign Charges.
- the refund may be only a partial refund for the Foreign Charge; or
- where third parties convert Charges in foreign currency, those third parties may treat refunds differently to the original foreign currency Charge.
