How do I freeze my Card, and what happens when I do?
You can freeze and unfreeze your Card quickly Online or in the American Express® App.
Freeze your Card using Online Services:
Log in to your American Express® Account and follow the next steps:
- Select the Account Management tab
- Select “Security & Privacy”
- Select “Freeze Your Card”
- Confirm the Card by selecting “Freeze Card” button.
Freeze your Card using American Express® App:
- Select the Account tab.
- Select “Freeze or Unfreeze a Card”
- Select “Freeze Your Card”
- Confirm the Card by selecting “Freeze Card” sliding button.
If you’re unsure where your Card is, freezing it can help protect your Account while you look for it. If you find it, you can unfreeze your Card in the American Express App or through your Online Account. If you don’t locate it, you can request a replacement Card. If you replace your Card while it’s frozen, your existing Card will be cancelled and a new Card will be sent to you.
If you have Additional Cards on your Account, please note that each Card must be frozen separately. Both Main and Additional Cardmembers can manage their own Cards in the American Express App. However, Main Cardmembers cannot freeze Additional Cards. Additional Cardmembers must do this themselves through their Online Account.
When you freeze or unfreeze your Card, the change takes effect immediately. Your card will stay frozen for seven days if you don’t unfreeze it first. After that, we will automatically unfreeze Card for you.
