If sprawling Tokyo has a center, it’s arguably the area around Tokyo Station. The elegant red-brick structure, lovingly restored in 2012, hosts a vast number of converging train lines, including Japan’s famous Shinkansen bullet train, serving as gateway to the city. Just west of the station is the Imperial Palace, as well as the Marunouchi district, which has undergone a significant transformation in recent years into a stylish center for dining, shopping and culture.
Directly to the east of Tokyo Station are Nihonbashi and Ginza, two districts that are a key part of Tokyo’s long history. Nihonbashi, which flourished as a mercantile center in the Edo period, is Japan’s literal “zero point,” the place from which all highways are measured, and continues to draw locals and travelers alike. Meanwhile, Ginza, Tokyo’s “seat of silver,” is known for kabuki theatre, luxury retailers and an eye-popping 3,000 eateries. With Tokyo Station, Nihonbashi and Ginza all within walking distance of each other (or easily traversed within minutes on the metro), this is a great place to start your Tokyo journey.
