QUICK TIPS

  • If you notice an incorrect charge, the fastest way to resolve the issue is often to contact the merchant. Otherwise, we can assist you quickly online.
  • If you’d like to dispute a pending charge, please note that it must become a “posted transaction” before we can begin the process. Until then, we can monitor a pending charge and email you if it appears on your account.
  • To select a pending charge for monitoring, find the transaction under the Pending Charges section on your Statements & Activity page and click Alert Me When Posted. Follow the steps to complete the process.

What is a Pending Charge?

A pending charge is one that hasn’t been posted to your account yet. It doesn’t add to your balance or accrue interest.

How do I open a billing dispute?

Please visit the Statements & Activity page and click on the transaction in question to view more details. Click on Dispute/Inquire about this Charge to begin the process.

How do I check the status of a billing dispute?

Please visit the Inquiry and Dispute Center and click on Manage My Disputes. Locate the open dispute in the View/Cancel Open Disputes section and click on Cancel/View Status.

What does “cancelling my Card” mean?

When we cancel your lost or stolen Card, the Card number will no longer be valid. We are not, however, canceling your American Express account.

How long will it take to resolve a billing dispute?

Most disputes are resolved within a month, although complex cases could require additional time.

Will I have to pay for the disputed amount while it is under review?

We will remove the disputed amount from your required payment due until the matter is resolved.

How do I cancel a billing dispute?

To cancel a dispute, please visit the Inquiry and Dispute Center and click on Manage My Disputes. Click on Cancel/View Status next to the open dispute you want to cancel. Click the Cancel Inquiry button on the window that appears, select the reason for why you're cancelling, then click Submit.
