What is the Amex Stadium?

The world-class American Express Stadium is a football ground in Brighton, South East England; home to Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion. It’s a versatile space that represents the heart of the community, bringing football fans together, as well as playing host to other sporting and corporate events and charity fundraisers.

History and Milestones

The Amex Stadium opened in 2011 to replace Albion’s previous temporary home, Withdean Stadium, having moved from the Goldstone some years before. It started with 22,500 seats, but has since grown to be the second-largest stadium in the South East, with approximately 31,800 capacity. After Albion’s promotion in 2017, it now stages Premier League football.

 

The stadium has seen multiple matches and events, with key milestones being:

 

  • Naming rights: The new stadium is named American Express Stadium, after securing a naming rights agreement with American Express in 2010.
  • Inaugural match: In July 2011, Brighton & Hove Albion play their inaugural match against Tottenham Hotspur.
  • Expansion: In response to high demand for tickets, the stadium was extended to increase seating capacity in 2013.
  • Premier League Club: At the end of the 2016-17 season, Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club were promoted to the Premier League – the top tier of the English football league system.
  • Record attendance: In December 2017, and during the Premier League match against Arsenal, the stadium recorded its highest attendance.
  • In 2023, Brighton & Hove Albion finished 6th in the Premier League table and will play in the Europa League during the 23/24 season for the first time.

There are currently 19 matches scheduled at the Amex Stadium in the upcoming Premier League season (from August 2023 to May 2024), with the club calling full time with Brighton V Manchester United on 19 May.

How to get to the Amex Stadium

You’ve got plenty of options to access the Amex Stadium as it’s well-connected to Brighton and nearby areas via public transport. On matchdays there are several buses to the Amex Stadium, while you could also get the train to Falmer Station, which is right beside the ground.

 

If you’re driving, there are many parking options available.

The Amex Stadium offers a wide range of facilities and amenities for fans, such as: 

  • Amex Lounge & Executive Boxes. Located in the East Stand, the Amex Lounge is a contemporary space with floor to ceiling windows that look out across the pitch – perfect for a drinks reception. Our Executive Boxes also allow you to relax and entertain at your own pace, away from the crowds.
  • Amex Stadium food and drink. There are plenty of food options and bars at the Amex Stadium, serving snacks, meals and drinks.
  • Parking areasThe club has two park and ride sites around the city: Mill Road and Brighton Racecourse – which are both served by at least one wheelchair-accessible bus.
  • Club shop. The Superstore sells merchandise including the latest replica shirts.
  • First aid stations. Defibrillators are available around the stadium, while the Amex Stadium security staff is trained in first aid.
