The Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Prevention Act (Wwft) obliges American Express to regularly check your data. Please help us doing this by re-identifying yourself.

For the online identification process, American Express works with Signicat. Signicat uses iDIN and Onfido to verify your identity.

Log in with the reference number stated in the letter and the name stated on your American Express card. To complete the identification process, please have the following available:

• Your reference number as stated in letter or email
• Your gross annual income (look at your annual statement or monthly salary slip)
• The login details of your bank
• Your passport or ID card (EU or EEA).

Your driving license is not accepted as proof of identity.

Important information about the ID document

 

On your smartphone, you can take a photo of the ID document and upload it during the identification process, or you can upload a scan of the document (JPG, PNG or PDF) from your computer, smartphone or tablet.

Valid ID's:

  • A copy of the front of the hard plastic page of a valid passport.
  • A copy of a valid European ID (issued in an EU or EEA country).

 

Important:

  • A driving license is not allowed as proof of identity.
  • Your ID document must be clearly legible.
  • The ID document must be valid for at least one month at the time of submission.
  • Your citizen service number is automatically protected.

 

Frequently asked questions

 

I have received a letter dated some time ago. Why is this?

Our communication is sent via an automated process. If you receive the communication by letter, it can take longer for it to reach you because our correspondence is sent from abroad. Unfortunately, during the pandemic it has been the case that the post takes longer than normal to arrive and it can be 1 to 2 weeks before you receive it.

We ask you to complete the identification process within 3 weeks.

I am the main Cardmember and I have received a letter stating that the Cardmember(s) of my extra Card(s) must confirm their identity(ies). When does the Cardmember of the extra Card receive his/her personal reference number so that he/she can complete the identification process?

If we have an email address for the Cardmember of the extra Card, an email will normally be sent to the Cardmember of the extra Card within a few days of your receiving the letter. This email will contain the personal reference number and a direct link to the identification process.

If we do not have a (valid) email address for them, we will send the request by letter to the address of the Cardmember of the extra Card. It can 1 to 2 weeks before the Cardmember of the extra Card receives the letter, since this letter will be sent from abroad. Unfortunately, during the pandemic it has been the case that the post takes longer than normal to arrive.

To prevent this from happening, the Cardmember of the extra Card can provide American Express their email address through the Amex NL App, or by logging in to their account on americanexpress.nl/contactgegevens.

I have multiple Cards in my name and I have been notified that I need to confirm my identity. Do I have to complete the identification process for all my Cards?

You will be asked to confirm your identity for each Card in your name. You will be given a unique reference number for each Card. If your Cards are linked to each other, you will automatically receive a message during the identification process that you only need to complete the process once. You will be able to see which other reference numbers we are linking the details to. After you have successfully completed the identification process you will receive a conformation for each Card, or we will ask you for additional details if needed.

If you do not automatically receive this message during the identification process, your Cards are not linked to each other and you will have to complete the process for each Card using the unique reference number.

Why does American Express need to establish and verify my identity and income?

  • American Express has a legal obligation to identify all cardholders and verify information.
  • Also, the information American Express has available about existing cardholders should be checked regularly.
  • This legal obligation to identify cardholders is based on the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Prevention) Act (Wwft), chapter 1 (definition of a customer) and chapter 5 (retention of supporting documents) in combination with DNB guidelines on money laundering and financing of terrorism and sanctions law (SW).

Why is American Express asking for this documentation right now?

If you have received an email or letter from us, this means that we do not yet have all the mandatory documentation from you that is required of us by the stricter regulations. We must be able to demonstrate this documentation when requested by the supervisor.

What does American Express do with the received documents?

The documents are stored in the secure environment of American Express. We use advanced technology and well-defined procedures to ensure that your information is processed promptly, accurately, completely and securely.

We only use your personal data in accordance with the rules of conduct laid down in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

We only provide information to official bodies when there is a legal basis for this.

How long are the documents kept?

We keep the copies of the identity documents for as long as necessary or required by applicable law.

How safe is it to provide my personal information via the website?

American Express works with Signicat. Signicat uses iDIN and Onfido to verify your identity in a secure environment. All your personal information will be deleted from Signicat's servers after identification.

Who must identify themselves?

American Express has a legal obligation to identify and verify all cardholders. Also, the information American Express has available about existing cardholders should be checked regularly.

What are valid IDs?

You can identify yourself with a European passport or Identity card (issued in an EU or EEA country). The proof of identity must still be valid for at least one month at the time of submission.

Note: a driver's license is not a valid proof of identity.

Can I protect my BSN?

Your social security number (BSN) is automatically protected from your ID document before it is sent to American Express.

What should I do if my bank is not listed in iDIN and / or if I have a foreign bank account?

If your bank is not listed or you have a foreign bank account, you can skip this step. You will automatically receive a message from us, within max. 15 working days, with the request to upload a proof of your private address instead.

What are IDIN and Onfido?

iDIN is an initiative of the Dutch banks. A fast, secure and easy way for online identification via the secure and trusted login method of your own bank. With iDIN, certain information is confirmed that is already known to your bank, such as your name, address and date of birth.

Onfido is a reliable service provider that makes it possible to upload ID documents (such as passport or identity card) from a computer or mobile phone in a secure environment for identification.

What if I don't respond?

You are main Cardmember:
If you do not respond to our request, we may unfortunately have to block your account. This means that all your (extra) Cards will be suspended from further expenditure until you have confirmed your identity. If we don't receive the requested information from you, your Account will eventually be cancelled, as we have to comply with the law. Of course we would like to prevent this.

You are Cardmember of the extra Card:
If you do not respond to our request, we may unfortunately have to suspend your Card. This means that your Card will be suspended from further expenditure until you have confirmed your identity. If we don't receive the requested information from you, your Card will eventually be cancelled, as we have to comply with the law. Of course we would like to prevent this.

Do you need help with the process?
Contact our Customer Service. The team can be reached every business day from 8 am to 8 pm at the telephone number on the back of your Card.

I have been notified that my Card has been suspended from further spending because the identification process has not been completed (successfully) yet. What can I do to reactivate my Card?

You are main Cardmember:
Your Account has been suspended. This means that all your (extra) Cards are suspended. To reactivate your Account, you must complete the identification process. After you have received confirmation from us (within 15 business days) that your documentation has been approved, your Account - including all your Cards - will be reactivated automatically within a week.

You are Cardmember of the extra Card:
Your Card has been suspended. To reactivate your Card, you must complete the identification process. After you have received confirmation from us (within 15 business days) that your documentation has been approved, your Card will be reactivated automatically within a week.
