Artificial Intelligence (AI) Usage Guidance for Candidates

We’re excited to use AI to help us work faster and smarter in our roles. However, whether you’re a candidate in the recruitment process or considering applying for a role at American Express, AI should only be used in the limited ways outlined below. We want to learn about your interest in joining Team Amex and get to know you and your skills with limited assistance from AI. Candidates are expected to use AI responsibly and in ways that are consistent with our company values. Any inappropriate use of AI during the recruitment process - including use that misrepresents your own work or abilities - may result in disqualification from further consideration.

Candidate Identity
X It is never acceptable to alter your identity, image or voice with the use of AI.

Research:
✓ AI usage for research is permitted. Fact check all sources for accuracy.

CV Creation:
✓ AI can be used for enhancing the formatting and structure of the CV.
X It’s not acceptable to use AI to generate CV content that embellishes responsibilities and contributions without personal input.

Cover Letter Creation
✓ AI can be used for improving an existing draft of a cover letter.
X It’s not acceptable to have AI write the entire cover letter without personal input. Cover letters should reflect your perspective and specific interest in Amex.

Digital Devices (i.e. ‘smart glasses’, headphones, hidden earpieces)
✓ AI can be used when supporting a medical need.
X It’s not acceptable to use digital devices to take photos, videos, notes, or translate information to manipulate your interview answers.

All Interviews (Video and In Person)
✓ AI can be used to practice frequently asked interview questions and interview tips.
X It is not acceptable to use AI during a virtual or in person interview unless explicitly authorized by the interviewer. This includes the use of commonly known AI Tools unless specifically permitted by your interviewer.

Coding Assessments and Technical Interviews
✓ Depending on the role, there may be technical assessments that you will complete assessing your AI literacy and usage capabilities.
X It’s not acceptable to submit AI-generated solutions or copy-paste prompts and submit outputs without modification.

Ownership of Work:
✓ AI can be used to refine or enhance work that you fully understand and can independently reproduce and explain.
X It’s not acceptable to submit AI-generated work that you cannot explain, justify, or replicate, including prompt-and-paste outputs.
