International Travel Checklist: 5 Things to Consider

A lot of preparation goes into traveling overseas. Aside from packing your bags and creating an itinerary, don't forget about creating a financial game plan. Having a plan for managing foreign currency and spending overseas can help you save money and avoid frustrating setbacks.

1. Explore your overseas Card Member benefits

Before you even embark on your journey, it’s a good idea to explore your Card’s travel and international perks. Look into using American Express Membership Rewards®1 to book hotel stays, flights, or pay for excursions or meals.

If you’re looking for a credit card, you’ll also want to familiarize yourself with American Express Cards® travel-related benefits, which vary based on Card, but include Airport Lounge Access2, Priority Boarding3, and Baggage Insurance Plan4, which can reimburse you if your bags are lost or stolen. Also important is Purchase Protection5. Purchase Protection can help protect eligible purchases made with the Card against accidental damage, theft and sometimes provide lost coverage for certain Card products for up to 90 days from the date of purchase. Please read important exclusions and restrictions.

2. Review your credit card's foreign transaction fee

Some credit cards incur a foreign transaction fee for non-U.S. dollar purchases. Some American Express Credit Cards are exempt from this fee.6 If you travel abroad often, you may want to explore all of these options to help avoid foreign transaction fees when shopping abroad.

3. Set up wearable payments or get a contactless credit card

Wearable payments are becoming more and more popular in the U.S. and abroad. This technology is available with select smartphones, smart watches, fitness bands, bracelets, and more. Also consider contactless chip cards, including most of American Express' Consumer products, as well as the Blue for Business® Credit Card and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card.

If the merchant has a contactless sign at checkout, you can tap any enabled and compatible  device or card to make a purchase. Just note that there may be some restrictions on these transactions, such as a limit on the value of a contactless transaction, or you may be required to present additional identification.

4. Use mobile apps to stay connected to your financial accounts

This may be a good time to download your bank or credit card's mobile app so you can easily manage your account while traveling. On iOS and Android devices, the American Express Mobile App® enables you to review recent transactions, receive real-time purchase and fraud alerts, pay bills, check your Membership Rewards® points balance, and add American Express Offers to your Card, all while on the go.6

5. Travel with the reassurance that help is available

US American Express Card Members can call 1-800-333-AMEX (2639) to reach the Global Assist® Hotline.7 When you travel more than 100 miles from home, the Global Assist Hotline can help coordinate assistance or refer you to a local specialist for emergencies like a lost passport or an injury that requires medical assistance. Card Members are responsible for the costs charged by third party service providers.
