STEP 2
Complete the form with your name and contact information, as well as financial details including employment status, personal and household income and expenses.
STEP 3

Please note, you may be required to provide supporting documents if required. If you have any questions, please call 1300 557 743 from Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 6:30 pm AEST. Should add either in step 2 or 3 provide supporting documents if required.
How do I know if I’m eligible?
Before you can start your Credit Card application, there are some criteria you will need to meet.
To apply for an American Express® Credit Card you must:
- Be 18 years or over.
- Have a good credit history.
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident or hold a long term visa. Long term means 12 months or more and does not include a student visa.
- If self-employed, have been trading for at least 12 months.
What do I need to have ready before I apply?
When applying for a Credit Card, you’ll need to have some personal and financial information on hand.
Here’s what we’ll need before you start your application:
- Your driver’s licence (If available) – this will help us verify your identity.
- Personal information, including your current address and any previous addresses if you’ve lived at your current address for less than five years.
- A current email address and a mobile or landline phone number.
- Financial information including your annual household income, marital status, monthly living expenses, employment details and status (if retired), or other sources of income.
- Details of any other Credit Cards and loans you have and their balances.
Confirming your identity
Before we can finalise your Credit Card application, you’ll need to verify your identity. You can do this quickly and securely, using our online ID check.
What ID do I need?
Use your current Australian driver’s licence to verify your identity. We’ll need to know:
- Your driver’s licence number (not the card number).
- The state it was issued in
- The expiry date
How it works
- Apply for your selected American Express Card.
- Fill in and review the personal details in your application. Be sure to use your full legal name.
- Complete the rest of the application and submit when ready.
- We’ll automatically check the details entered in your application against external data sources to verify your identity.
Sometimes we might be unable to verify your identity online. This could be because the details entered don’t match exactly, you’ve recently moved addresses or due to another reason. In this case, once your application has been submitted, we’ll be in touch to collect the relevant documentation.
Verifying your income
To assess a new Credit Card application or a credit limit increase (if you already have an existing American Express Credit Card), we need to understand your financial situation by verifying your income.
How is my income verified?
During the application process, we’ll obtain your consent to verify your income using a third-party service. This is an online alternative to providing email or paper copies of your payslips and could help fast-track your application.
You may also need to provide proof of income like payslips or tax returns, by using the document upload service. You can also email them to newaccountsaustralia@aexp.com and mention your reference number. These methods take longer than using the online income verification service.
What is a credit assessment?
As part of your Credit Card application we’ll need to carry out an evaluation to ensure you’re able to meet the obligations of the Credit Card contract. We will perform the Credit check after stage one of the application.
- Your ability to repay
- Your financial responsibility
- Your chance of defaulting (not paying back your debt)
- Your credit history
To obtain your credit history information, we’ll review your ‘credit file’, a record of information that’s held by credit reporting agency, Equifax. To receive a copy of your credit file, visit mycreditfile.com.au.
Credit files are protected by the Privacy Act, and access, use, and disclosure are subject to obligations.
Your credit history
You begin to establish a credit history when you open an account with a telephone service provider, apply for a loan, or through your first Credit Card. The way you manage your accounts may impact your credit history.
Helping to establish a good credit history
Many credit providers will also review your credit file when reviewing your personal loan, mortgage, or Card application. Here are some things they may look at:
- The type of credit you’ve enquired about.
- How often you apply for credit and how much.
- Any overdue accounts listed against your name.
To maintain a good credit history, you should always pay your bills on time. If you’re moving to a new residential address, provide your lenders with your new address and other contact information to avoid late or missed payments.
- If you apply for a product or request to increase your product limit, we will perform a credit check. A credit check is when we ask a credit reporting body for information about other products you hold, have held or have applied for and whether you’ve satisfied your repayment obligations.
- The credit reporting body will record the fact that we have done a credit check. This will show on your credit report as a ‘credit enquiry’, and it may be disclosed to other credit providers or used in the calculation of your credit score by the credit reporting body.
- When a credit enquiry is recorded on your credit report, it can affect your credit score in different ways. It might go up, down, or stay the same. This depends on factors like the type of credit you're applying for, how many other credit checks you've had recently, and other details in your report. An enquiry is more likely to lower your credit score if you make a lot of credit applications in a short time.

- The type of credit you have enquired about
- How often you apply for credit and how much

The American Express Platinum Card Terms & Conditions
1. Platinum Travel Credit. If your Card has a Travel Credit benefit, the Primary Card Member is eligible for an annual Travel Credit, subject to Travel Credit Terms and Conditions at americanexpress.com.au/platinumtravelcreditterms . The Travel Credit can be redeemed through American Express Travel Online on a single eligible travel booking by selecting the Travel Credit when you checkout. To redeem the Travel Credit, the full value of the Travel Credit (or more) must be charged to the eligible Primary Card. Eligible travel includes flights, hotels and car hire when you prepay in advance. The Travel Credit can be used for 365 days from the benefit anniversary date and cannot be used past the expiration date. To check the expiration date of your Travel Credit if you have not already redeemed it, please visit americanexpress.com.au/travel; log in and click ‘Travel Credit’. If your booking is cancelled, and your Travel Credit has already been used and associated statement credit applied to your account, you will forfeit your annual Travel Credit benefit and American Express may reverse the statement credits issued. You need to be able to spend on the Card to access the Travel Credit benefit and it should be credited to your Card Account within 3 business days but may take up to 30 days. Your account must be in good standing and you must have paid the annual fee and minimum payment by the due date. If you cancel your Card, change your rewards program or Card type, you will no longer be eligible for the Travel Credit.
