What is Android Pay and can I participate as an American Express® Card Member?

Android Pay allows eligible Australian Card Members to use compatible Android devices to pay on the go at contactless merchants and in participating merchant apps wherever American Express Cards are accepted. As an American Express Card Member, you can also get these features in Android Pay: 

•  Real-time notifications and details about your purchases with your Card in Android Pay 
•  Seamless connection with the Amex® Mobile app for enhanced account monitoring, servicing on the go and access to rewards and offers

How does Android Pay work?

To use Android Pay for purchases, you must first add your eligible Card on your NFC-enabled Android device running Kit Kat 4.4 or above using the Android Pay app. If you don’t already have the Android Pay app on your device, you can download it from the Google Play Store. Once your Card has been added, simply wake up your device when you are ready to make a payment. Then hold your device near the contactless reader until your device beeps or vibrates and a checkmark appears on the screen indicating your payment is complete. 

When adding your Card to Android Pay, you will also be adding your Card to Google Payments. This allows you to use your Card to make purchases in places like the Google Play Store and online with Google. Where can I use Android Pay?

You can use Android Pay to make payments with your compatible Android device wherever American Express contactless payments are accepted. Just look for the contactless and/or Android Pay symbol at checkout.

All Australia American Express issued Cards are eligible for use with Android Pay. This includes American Express issued Personal, Small Business and Corporate Cards. A full list of eligible Cards is available here.

If you have an American Express Card issued by a bank, please check with your issuer if you are eligible to participate by calling the number on the back of your Card.

In order to use Android Pay, you need to have an NFC-enabled Android device running Kit Kat 4.4 or above and the Android Pay app. To download the Android Pay app or to check if your device is compatible with Android Pay, visit the Google Play Store.

How will my personal information be used?

How will my personal information be used?

We use your information to manage your use of Android Pay, present you with updates and to display targeted offers and advertising from time to time. Google share information with us for fraud and identification purposes. We always use your information in accordance with the American Express Online Privacy Statement.

We share aggregated and de-identified information with Google to help improve Android Pay. When you register your Card to your device, Google may access and process your information, including information about your transactions Google’s use of your personal information is solely governed by Google’s Privacy Policy.

To add an eligible American Express Card at any time on a compatible Android device, open the Android Pay app on your device and tap the “+” sign. If you do not have the app, you can download it from the Google Play Store.

When adding your Card, you can choose to add the Card you already have added to your Google account or add new Cards by manually entering your Card information or taking a picture of your Card. You will always need to enter your Security Code (the 4 digit number on the front of your Card) and accept the American Express Terms of Use for Android Pay each time you add a Card to Android Pay. You are also subject to Google Payments’ own terms & conditions.

When adding your Card to Android Pay, you will also be adding your Card to Google Payments. This allows you to use your Card to make purchases in places like the Google Play Store and online with Google. Where is the Security Code? Why is it required?

For security reasons, you will be required to enter your security code when adding your Card to Android Pay. The security code for your American Express Card (Card ID or CID) is the 4 digit, non-embossed number printed above your Card Account number on the front of your plastic Card.

I was prompted to receive a one-time Verification Code. What is this and why is it required?

For security purposes, we may ask you to enter a one-time Verification Code to confirm your identity. This code is a unique series of numbers and/or letters that you can choose to receive via email or text. If prompted, please select how you wish to receive the one-time Verification Code and then enter that code into the appropriate field. Please note that you will need a working internet and/or data connection to receive a one-time Verification Code.

Your one-time Verification Code may expire if you aren’t able to enter it within 10 minutes. You can request another code by selecting your preferred verification option again. If you are unable to get a one-time Verification Code, please contact American Express Customer Care by calling the number on the back of your Card.

Can I put multiple Cards on my phone?

Yes, Google allows you to add multiple Cards to your device. Your Card issuer may limit the number of individual Card products which can be loaded at any one time.

Yes, you can add your eligible American Express Card to multiple devices. For each of your devices, you will need to add your Card by visiting the Android Pay app. If you have an issue adding additional Cards, please contact American Express Customer Care at the number on the back of your Card. Only ever add a Card to a phone that belongs to you, to avoid unauthorised purchases.

Can I use my Card with multiple Google accounts?

Yes. At this time, American Express allows you to add your eligible American Express Card to two unique Google accounts.

You can remove your Card by tapping your Card in the Android Pay app and selecting "Remove Card" at the bottom of the screen.

What terms apply to my use of Android Pay?

Your Card Member Agreement governs the use of your Card in Android Pay. We have also outlined some Important Information about using your Card in Android Pay, which can be accessed here . Google may change Android Pay from time to time. American Express has no control over Android’s decisions to change Android Pay or any of its services or products (including Google’s terms of use or privacy policy). In order to use Android Pay you must agree to Google’s terms of use and privacy policy.

How can I make a purchase with Android Pay?

To use Android Pay for purchases, you must first add your eligible Card on your compatible Android device using the Android Pay app.

Once your Card has been added, to make an in-store payment simply wake up your device and hold it to the contactless reader until your device beeps or vibrates and a checkmark appears on the screen indicating your payment is complete. If the cost of your purchase is $100 or more, you will also need to enter your PIN on the terminal. This is the same PIN which you would use to authorise a regular payment with your American Express Card.

To make a purchase in participating apps, select the “Buy with Android Pay” button when you reach the checkout screen.

Do I need to have an active internet connection for Android Pay to work?

An active internet connection is not required to make in-store purchases. There is a limited number of transactions permitted during a period without internet access (usually five), after which your device will need an internet connection to make additional authorisations. You will also need an active internet connection to activate the app or add a new Card.

You may be asked to provide the last four digits of your Device Account Number – this is different to the last few digits of your Card number. To find your Device Account Number, tap on your Card in the Android Pay app and scroll down to your Card details.

Do I still get the same benefits (for example, Membership Rewards® points) associated with my Card when I use Android Pay?

Do I still get the same benefits (for example, Membership Rewards® points) associated with my Card when I use Android Pay?

Yes, you receive all of the same rewards, security and benefits of your eligible American Express Card when you use it with Android Pay. Please visit your Card account on amex.com.au or in the Amex Mobile app to see your individual Card benefits.

Managing Your Card in Android Pay

Where can I view and manage my Card in Android Pay?

Where can I view and manage my Card in Android Pay?

You can view and manage your Cards in the Android Pay app. When you tap on your Card, scroll down to view your Card details including transactions and your Device Account Number. You also have the ability to remove your Card from the device.

You will receive "Transaction Notifications" for purchases you make using your American Express Card in Android Pay. To turn off "Transaction Notifications" for all Cards, open the Android Pay app, tap the menu, and tap "Settings." Please keep in mind that by turning off your "Transaction Notifications" you will no longer receive notifications from Android Pay.

No. Your Device Account Number is connected to your new Card number automatically. You can use your eligible Card in Android Pay to make purchases before receiving your new plastic Card.
