By participating in the Pay with Points at checkout with PayPal program using American Express Membership Rewards points (“MR Points”), you agree to these terms established by Amex Bank of Canada (“Amex” or “American Express”) as well as PayPal’s Terms and Conditions. All references in these Terms and Conditions to “we”, “us” or similar are references to American Express.
Pay with Points at checkout with PayPal is only available at PayPal checkout with eligible online merchants, and these merchants may change at any time without notice. The option to pay with points will be displayed as part of the PayPal checkout process when available. Different options for redeeming points may have different values. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the alternatives available to you and to make the choice that best suits your needs.
To use your MR Points to purchase items through PayPal, your eligible Membership Rewards program account (“MR Points Account”) must be linked to your PayPal account. Your MR Points Account is automatically linked when you link an Eligible Card to your PayPal account. Any Eligible Card that is already linked to your PayPal account will have their MR Points Account automatically linked, unless you take steps to un-enroll it after linking has occurred.
An "Eligible Card" is a valid, Membership Rewards-enrolled (a) American Express Consumer Card, (b) Business Card from American Express, or (c) American Express Corporate Card (“Corporate Card”), which must be issued by Amex Bank of Canada. You will only be able to use MR Points if you are the primary account holder of the Eligible Card. In addition, the Eligible Card account must also be in good standing and not in default at the time of redemption. The MR Points Account must also have a balance of at least 1 MR Point at the time of redemption.
Amex may share information with PayPal regarding your MR Points Account for the sole purpose of managing and facilitating the Pay with Points program using MR Points. This information sharing allows us to determine your card’s eligibility, and Amex may provide PayPal with information about your MR Points Account, including your total MR Points balance. We may also collect information that you have provided to PayPal so that we can perform our functions with respect to the Pay with Points program, including processing payments made with MR Points. Neither PayPal nor Amex will use information provided to it by the other party in support of the Pay with Points program for any purpose other than as expressly set forth in these Terms and Conditions.
To view your available MR Points balance and to see the redemption rate for MR Points using Pay with Points at checkout with PayPal, go to membershiprewards.ca. Your MR Points balance may also be shown to you during the PayPal checkout process.
When you choose to use MR Points toward an eligible purchase, you will have the option of choosing how many MR Points to use. You may select up to the total amount of MR Points required to cover the total purchase amount or up to the full value of your MR Points balance, whichever is less. Following your selection, Amex will debit these MR Points from the MR Points Account linked to the Eligible Card. Your Card account will be charged in full for the purchase, and a statement credit reflecting the value of the MR Points used will post to your Card account, typically within 2-4 days. If a statement credit is processed after your Card account’s billing period, it will appear on your next statement.
If there is a processing error when you try to use MR Points or if you do not have any MR Points remaining in your MR Points Account at the time they are to be redeemed, your Eligible Card will still be charged, and the corresponding statement credit will not be issued to the Eligible Card account for your transaction. If this occurs and you would still like to use MR Points for your transaction after the fact, please call the number on the back of your Eligible Card and Amex will endeavour to assist you.
You are responsible for payment of all amounts due on your Card account by the payment due date. Statement credits applied to your Card account do not constitute a payment towards the minimum payment due. You must always make a separate payment of at least the minimum payment due in accordance with the Cardmember Agreement and billing statement.
Your MR Points Account balance will be reduced to reflect the number of MR Points used toward your purchase. MR Points may not currently be combined with points from other rewards programs when making purchases.
If you return the goods or cancel the service you’ve purchased from the seller, then any refund you receive will be credited to your Card account. Your MR Points Account will not be reimbursed. If you no longer have an Eligible Card account, then Amex will issue you a cheque for the appropriate refund. Returns are subject to a specific merchant’s returns policy.
If you use a Corporate Card to make a purchase (whether alone or in conjunction with MR Points), you agree that you are using the Corporate Card in accordance with your company’s policies for use. In the event that a returned item results in a credit to your Corporate Card, it is your sole responsibility to resolve this with your company and you agree to hold American Express harmless in respect of any loss you may incur.
