Our tips to help prevent fraud
Keep your financial details safe and secure. Here’s what
you can do to help minimise the risk of fraud.
• Never let anyone else use your Debit, Credit or Charge Cards
• Immediately sign the back of new Cards
• Always destroy old, expired Cards by cutting them up
• Keep an eye on your Card when paying for goods or services
Protect your PIN• Never keep your PIN in your wallet, purse or diary, or record it in a way that others could understand
• Never select a PIN or code that’s easily associated with you, such as your date of birth, or a number that can be found on other items that are contained in your wallet or purse
• Do not tell anyone else your PIN, password or security information
• Always try to prevent others from watching you enter your PIN at a terminal or ATM.
• Beware of any parties that call or email you and request your PIN, password or security information. If an American Express representative phones you they will never ask you for this information. We would only ever request your account details and password if you called us.
Shop wisely online• When shopping online, only use "secure" web pages. A web page is secure if there is a locked padlock in the lower right-hand corner of your browser, or if the address starts with ‘https where the ‘s’ stands for secure.
• If you use wireless internet access, be sure it’s a secure connection and has up-to-date virus protection
Review your statements regularly• Keep copies of your receipts and compare them to your statement
• Call your card issuer promptly if an unrecognised charge or charges appear on one of your statements
• When no longer required, make sure you destroy or securely dispose of any unwanted statements
• Checking your statements is easy to do with online services – you can check your transactions daily.
Or register for Card Alerts to monitor your account activity, with weekly account balance updates by email or text message
Protect yourself from identity theft• Safeguard all your personal information and documents, such as your date of birth, driving licence, bank statements – this information can be used to steal your identity
• Tear up or shred any sensitive information from financial organisations or utility companies when no longer needed
• Review your credit reference report¹; this may be the earliest way to detect if you’re a potential victim of identity theft.
Protect yourself from phishingPhishing takes the form of fake emails or websites that try and get you to part with sensitive financial information like log-in details or passwords.
• Never release your card number, PIN or password to an unknown party Note: American Express will never request this information if we are calling you – we may only request this information if you phone us. Beware of parties calling or emailing you and requesting this information
• If you are unsure about the identity of a caller, ask for the caller's name and department and tell them you will call them back on a published phone number, such as one printed on their statements, listed in the phone book or on their website
• If you are unsure about the source of an email contact that company via published contact details. Do not respond to it. Delete any email you are not comfortable with.
• Keep your anti-virus software and firewall up-to-date to prevent offenders accessing your details via your computer.
