USING YOUR CARD ABROAD

This page provides information about using your Card abroad and the related costs you may incur.

What exchange rate will be used?
If you make a transaction in a foreign currency, we will convert it into Pound Sterling on the date we process it. Unless a particular rate is required by law, we will use conversion rates based on interbank rates we select from customary industry sources on the business day prior to the processing date (called the "American Express Exchange Rate"). This rate may differ from rates that are in effect on the date of your transaction. Fluctuations may be significant. If the transaction is in U.S. Dollars, it will be converted directly into Pound Sterling. In all other cases, it will first be converted into U.S. Dollars and then into Pound Sterling.

What fees will I be charged?
If you make a transaction in a foreign currency, you will be charged a non-sterling transaction fee of 2.99% on the transaction amount. If you use your Card to withdraw cash abroad a cash fee of 3% of the withdrawal amount or £3 (whichever is greater) will be payable in addition to the non-sterling transaction fee. You may need to enrol in order to withdraw cash and we may apply restrictions on the amount or the frequency in which you use the cash advance facility, please visit americanexpress.com/uk/cash for further information.

As an example, if you use your Card to make a purchase of €100 at an American Express Exchange Rate of 1.237 the amount you will have to pay in total is £83.25. This is made up of a foreign transaction value after conversion of £80.84, plus £2.41 non-sterling transaction fee. If you use your Card to withdraw €100 in cash at the same exchange rate the amount you will have to pay in total is £86.25. This is made up of a foreign transaction value after conversion of £80.84, plus £2.41 non-sterling transaction fee and £3 cash fee.

How will interest be charged?
If you have a Credit Card, we will charge interest on all balances that result from purchases from the date the transaction is applied to your account if you choose not to pay the balance in full by the statement due date. We will charge interest on all balances that result from cash advances from the date the cash advance is applied to your account irrespective of whether you pay the balance in full.
