SMALL CHIP SUPERIOR SECURITY

Why Chip & PIN Technology?

Why Chip & PIN Technology?

Chip & PIN technology is an established standard for safety and security for Card transactions. A Chip and PIN Card not only ensures greater security of Point-of-Sale (POS) Card transactions, but also provides enhanced protection against fraud from lost, stolen and counterfeit Cards.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a set of guidelines on securing Card transactions. In compliance with these guidelines, American Express will be replacing existing magnetic stripe Cards with Chip and PIN enabled Cards in a phased manner over the coming few months.

Is there anything I need to do?

The transition to Chip & PIN technology will take place gradually over the next few months. Since everything will be done automatically, you don’t need to request a new Chip Card. We will notify you when your new Chip Card will be sent to your registered mailing address. To ensure successful delivery of your new Chip Card, please update your contact details by either logging in or registering for American Express Online Services and selecting the “Manage Your Account” tab.

Once you receive your new Card, you will be required to select a PIN of your choice (view the “How do I select my PIN?” tab for details). Meanwhile, you can continue to use your existing American Express Card as you normally do. The new Chip & PIN technology will simply make an already safe payment system even more secure.

How will Chip & PIN technology benefit me?
  • Chip & PIN technology makes it difficult to duplicate or access data stored on your Card. As a result, Chip Cards provide enhanced protection against fraud from lost, stolen or counterfeit cards.
  • You will have a unique PIN that is provided only to you. This PIN is key to authorizing Card transactions and ensuring that your Card remains secure.

Remember to choose a PIN for all your American Express Card(s) individually.

Please ensure that you register all your Supplementary and/or additional Chip Cards and individually select a 4-digit PIN at www.americanexpress.co.in or via IVR on the helpline.

How do I change my PIN?

Please note that for your added protection, once a PIN is either selected by you or generated by the system, you will not be able to change it.

If you think your PIN isn’t secret anymore or you want to change it for any other reason, please call the helpline number printed on the reverse of your Card.

How do I unlock my PIN?

If an incorrect PIN is entered multiple times while making a purchase, then the Card may get locked, preventing further usage. In this case, please call the helpline number printed on the reverse of your Card for assistance.

How does it Work?

How does it Work?

Chip & PIN technology uses an embedded microchip to encrypt your information, making it more difficult for unauthorized users to copy or access your data. Data can only be accessed when your Card is inserted into a Chip-enabled terminal and you enter your unique PIN that has either been selected by you or generated by the system.

The microchip allows for more accurate verification of a Card's authenticity and a Cardmember's identity. You will have a unique PIN that identifies you as the rightful holder of your Card and this will replace your signature as the means of authorizing a Card transaction.

When you make a purchase with a Chip Card at a Chip-enabled terminal, instead of swiping your Card, the merchant will follow these simple steps:

1. Insert your Chip Card into the terminal and keep it there for the duration of the transaction

2. Follow the prompts and request you to key in your 4-digit PIN to authorize the transaction. Your PIN replaces your signature

3. Generate and hand-over to you a printed confirmation receipt upon successful completion of your transaction
