  1. Why did American Express update the Online Privacy Statement?
    • While we have not changed the way we handle your personal information, we have revised our Online Privacy Statement to ensure it meets new legal requirements. Effective on the 25th of May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation replaces the previous Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC and introduces a number of new requirements, including some that cover the information that must be included in the Online Privacy Statement. We strive to make our privacy disclosures as clear and transparent as possible and continue to periodically review our Online Privacy Statement to ensure it reflects our current practices and legal requirements

  2. What changes did American Express make to its Online Privacy Statement?
    • We have made a number of changes to give you additional details about what data we collect and how we use it, your rights as a data subject, and how you can exercise these rights. We include the legal basis under which we may process your data to deliver our products and services, to market to you, to detect fraud, and manage other risks relating to our business. We provide examples of where we use automated means to make decisions about you. Additionally, we provide further information about how long we retain your data and with whom we share and transfer your data. We have updated the section on how to get further information and how to contact our Data Protection Officer.

  3. How do the changes affect web and mobile visitors, including American Express Cardmembers and Merchants?
    • While we have updated the Online Privacy Statement, we have not changed the way we use, share or safeguard online information.

  4. When do the changes go into effect?
    • The Online Privacy Statement becomes effective as of the “Effective Date,” which can be found at the top of the statement.

  5. How do American Express Cardmembers and Merchants access and manage their privacy choices?
    • Our Cardmembers and merchants always have the right to access, update, change or correct their personal information. If you wish to do so or if you have any questions about how we process your personal information, please click here to log in to our Cardmember online services and go to Account Management, then Alerts and Preferences.
